Class Agertt, WILLIAM H. SCHERMAN 1038 Clay Ave., Pelham Manor, N. Y.
"Hold your February notes down to a minimum,'' the letter from headquarters requested, "either writing them more concisely than usual or carrying over until March such items and excerpts as can be held without spoiling their news value."
"Well," as the feller said, "you can't buck City Hall," so what follows will indeed be squeezed down to make room for the more important annual Alumni Fund Report, complete with Bill Scherman's Aegis picture. And say—there's a sign-post for you: when they stop using that familiar Portrait Of The Agent As A Young Man then we'll know that Thirty Four is no longer a Juvenile and has at last become a fascinating Older Man, suitable for real gray-templed Robert-the-Roue roles. To be honest, though, a modern photo of Billy the Agent wouldn't look a hell of a lot different from the cut in question. Guy totes them years right graceful, don't he now? But look, we promised to be concise this trip. So here we go.
From Roslyn Heights, Long Island, BobKolbe offers us a cigar and the following happy bulletin: "Have a son, born Saturday, November 6, name: Thomas Austin Kolbe, weight 7 lbs. 1/2 oz. Looks like his mother." And about the time that came in we had joyous news from the Harry Wallace household, thanks to the demon reporting of George Copp. On the morning of December 15, just five hours after it happened, George revealed the birth of the third Wallace child, a boy. As we write this there are no statistics but we can say that the little guy sure seems headed for Hanover, what with green-tinged Papa Harry and Uncle George. Harry, incidentally, has left Curtis Publishing to join the C. F. Hathaway Co., shirt-makers.
Meanwhile another good reporter has filed his story, this one from our Foreign Bureau. "I've shaken the hand of General Marshall a couple of times," writes Capt. Ted Germann, "and thanks to the new horsepower taxes just imposed in France, have managed to pick-up an Hispano-Suiza for a song. I'll be heading for N. Y. in the Spring with my famille nombreuse (you're so ready to pour on the French, try that for size). Next assignment will probably be Instructor in French at the Military Academy at West Point."
Cleveland, the home of the World's Champion baseball and football teams, also appears to claim the champ logician, as witness this clipping from a sports column in the PlainDealer of Nov. 12. "John F. Anderson, Dartmouth '34, contributes the following exercise in logic: 'Dartmouth swamped Yale, 41 to 14. This makes Dartmouth 27 points better than Yale. Yale beat Wisconsin, 17 to 7, making Dartmouth 37 better than Wisconsin. Wisconsin beat Illinois, 20 to 17, making Dartmouth points better than Illinois. The Illini lost to Michigan, but only by 28 to 20. Therefore Dartmouth is 33 points better than Michigan, and the Wolverines are generally rated the nations top eleven.'" The same thriving metropolis boasts a champ dental surgeon and specialist on gum disorders, in the person of Dick Loughry, who writes: •'Everything as usual here. Saw Rollie Wilson in Columbus in September. He doesn't look any different than he used to except for a few less hairs." Aren't we all, Rollie?
The numerous West Hartford, Conn, branch of the widespread '34 family gained one more convert when the Al Hine menage moved to 56 High Farms Road there from New Britain. Al, referring to the class dues mailing of recent memory, writes "Reminds me of those Ruth Etting records you and BillGay used to play on the second floor of Middle Mass. Affect me the same way." But Al, Ruth was only asking ten cents a dance—our price is five bucks! Another address change involves Gardner Brown. Gard and family are now settled in their new house at 22 Ryder Street, Lewiston, Me. Also have a summer cottage on a nearby lake. Well, not on the lake—but alongside it.
Big news around New York is the recent appointment of Len Harrison as advertising director of Topps Chewing Gum. The metropolitan press passed along the word with articles and photos.
Now it's a pleasure to quote from a nice note written by Lee Hunt on the letterhead of the Second Congregational Church in Manchester, Conn., where he is the Minister. "After two short pastorates in Amherst, Mass. and East Providence, R. I., I entered the U. S. Army chaplaincy in June 1943, and served three years and one day (including terminal leave time). I spent 14 months with the Fourth Air Force on the west coast, and 20 months in the CBI Theatre. I have been at the present address since January 1, 1947- addition to carrying on my parish work, I am engaged in part-time study at the Hartford Seminary Foundation, hoping to work off a doctorate some day. The family comprises a wife and two daughters, the older of whom will be eight next March, the younger just past one year at this writing."
A while back in these columns we referred to the men in the Class who are engaged as Chairmen of Alumni Interviewing Committees. Now we have a complete list, and are proud to name them: Pret Belknap, Ward Harvey, Nels Krogslund, Jack Shea, Dick Gruen, BillScherman, Harry McCann, Bob Kolbe, MaxPalmer, Les Reeve, Ed Luedke and HankPeirce. In addition, there are many others who are serving as members on such committees, but unfortunately the complete roster is not available.
Well, the boss said to keep it short, so we better knock off. To you precious few who may exerience mild disappointment that our little visit has been more than usually fleeting this month we murmur "Bless You"; to that overwhelming majority who will instead shout "Bravo!" we ask "What do ya want egg in your nogg?"; and to all: a Good Night!
