This is a hell of a time to have to write class notes. We live in the north country for, among other things, its dependable and deep powder snow from December to April. Now, it's been raining for approximately a month, the only snow in the country is west of the Mississippi, and we're supposed to write cheerful notes. And, to boot, the file labeled 1940—current dope—will be empty when this hits the mails. The only possible cheer is the chance that that little mailing you all received a while back will result in such a flood of news, statistics, and gripes that this column will be full and interesting for months to come.

Our recent reference to the minute size of the bachelor club of 1940 resulted in swift denial from one of its permanent, he boasts, members. A quick rundown reveals that, so far as we know, one hundred forty five of the six hundred eight members of the class have not married. In spite of the volume in recent months, that leaves us with many more news bits to go.

The most recent of these to reach us are: Chet Garrison announced his engagement to Louise Pancake, teaching at George Washington University. They met while teaching at Ohio State last year. Chet is teaching English at the University of Louisville. Joan Ridley of New York was married to Tom Braden December 18. Ted Ellsworth was an usher. Betty Jane Whitcomb of Scarsdale is engaged to Bob Bunker. A spring wedding is planned. Mary Burnham of Roslindale was married to Woody Cataldo on November 6. Tom Todd and Frank Wright were ushers.

In the course of an occasional perusal of the club notes section, one of our careful readers has spotted the following men of the Class active in alumni club work: Bob White, Louisiana, Jack Rourke and Fred Fuld, Los Angeles, George Mahoney, Indianapolis, Hodge Jones, Nebraska, Ed Curtis, Maine, Bud Hewitt, New York, Joe Huber, Washington. A1 Dickjerson sends along the information that there are six men of 1940 participating as chairmen in the alumni interviewing of candidates for admission. They are: JohnLillis, New Hampshire, Alex Clark, New Jersey, Ted Ellsworth, lowa, Bob Thompson, Missouri, Hal McAllister, Connecticut, and Eb Cockley, Cleveland. Of course, there are many others working for committee chairmen, and many club workers who didn't get their names in print.

Chet Berry writes comprehensively of a recent 1940 party out Rochester way:

"An institution worthy of your attention has blossomed here, thanks to Jack Mac Donald. About ten days ago we assembled in Jack's apartment for the first jovial all-'40 session. Those present were Fran Imo, Joe Burnett, Ray Hotaling, our genial host, myself and our female supervisors Despite strong persuasion by telephone we were unable to get Andy Halbleib out, but we did hoist a couple in his behalf.

* "Statistics which were compiled indicate that Fran is with the Todd Company (business systems) and is looking forward to marriage in the spring. Joe, who is at the University of Rochester, is the father of a rugged lad. Ray is doing sales work for Socony-Vacuum and claims one and two-thirds children. Andy is with a condenser company in the nearby town of Victor and has two offspring, I believe. I am researching in physics at Kodak and admit two and one-half kids. Jack Mac Donald, who is doing sales work for Addressograph, has no attachments, but the lack of good home-cooking seems to have little effect on his prosperous waistline."

Fred Porter returns to the fold this month with the following Theta Delt report:

"A bunch of us had a get together at Princeton, and believe me that was an enjoyable game to watch. If those boys don't flunk out between now and next fall we should really have a ball club next year. In the group we had Ted and Margaret Brecht, Mac and Marilyn Cross, Sid and Kay Morley, Johnnie Burnap and Jack and Barbara Bowe '41. Saw Jack Towns end and date, DonSchott and many others who have escaped memory.

"Dave Leake picked the same day to get married in Baltimore. It must have been kind of hard on Dave to have to wait all that time to be sure he had a weekend when all his rough friends would be occupied.

"The baby and moving department is pretty bare. Sid has moved to Broomall outside of Philadelphia and Ted gave birth to a son last spring. I hope to move to New England soon, but that is still in the planning stage."

And the following brief mention: The firstNew York Dartmouth Club open house for1940, its wives and girl friends, was scheduledfor Saturday, January 29; Clint Clad has beenwith O'Malveny and Myers in Los Angelessince his graduation from Yale Law in 1947;Joe Christopher is living in Lakeview, (western) N. Y. and selling Old Golds; Maj. JimTimothy is a military attache at the American Embassy, Paris; Ned Basquin is a meteorologist at LaGuardia; Jim Scott has emigrated from Syracuse to New York for public accounting work with Arthur Andersen & Co.; Maj. Joe Bird is commanding officer of the Haneda Weather Central, Japan. Thanks to each of you*who remembered us with holiday cards.
