At the annual dinner of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Boston your secretary was the lone representative of the class. The table was truly one for old timers for seated there were representatives of '89, '90, 91, '92, '93, '97 and '98. President Dickey gave a mighty fine talk and gave us some thoughts to take away with us.

joe Bartlett departed for Florida late in February after having won a complete victory in a contest over the control of the Douglas Shoe Company of which he has been president for many years. Joe and his entire group of directors were reelected. Bucky Chandler has also been a Florida sojourner, having gone there at the first of the year.

The press of February 25, 1949 carried an Associated Press despatch that our ShermMoulton, chief justice of the Vermont supreme court since 1938, had applied for retirement, effective April x, because of ill health. He has been a supreme court justice since 1926. Before that he served seven years on the superior court bench. At the Fiftieth Sherm did not show any signs of ill health and it is hoped that the reason "ill health" was just a perfunctory one and an excuse for retiring.

In 1947 the Governor of New Hampshire appointed a committee of five as the New Hampshire Interim Committee on Over-All Taxation. Jack Spring was one of the appointees and he was later elected Chairman of the committee. That committee has just filed its report to the legislature. It is a very comprehensive report covering all the present taxes and recommendations for new ones. One of the recommendations was for a Gross Income Tax and a very complete and comprehensive proposed act was submitted with the report. In the report and recommendation of the act there appeared to be some doubt in the minds of the committee as to the constitutionality of the act and this doubt was confirmed by the Supreme Court of the state which held that the proposed act was unconstitutional. This does not detract from the fine work which a mere reading of the report shows that Jack did as a member of the committee.

The work on the report of the Fiftieth and the revised Who's Who of the class is now making marked progress and will shortly be in the hands of the class.

If you have not already done so send along to Jack your annual contribution to the Alumni Fund. This work is a labor of love on Jack's part and you may greatly relieve his burden by sending in your check after receipt of his first notice.
