Starting next fall, the varsity "D" will be the same size for all sports, it has been announced by William H. McCarter '19, director of athletics. The decision to have a standard 6-inch "D" instead of three different sizes was made by the Dartmouth Athletic Council at its last meeting.
The 6-inch letter is the size now awarded for baseball, basketball, hockey, track and skiing. Dropped will be the special 7-inch "D" for football and the "minor sport" 5-inch letter now given for cross-country, junior varsity football, soccer, squash, swimming, golf, lacrosse, tennis, crew, sailing, and speed-skating. Rifle, the only other officially recognized sport, will continue to receive a shoulder patch rather than a letter.
In addition to deciding that it is unfair to draw a distinction between the varsity sports, the DCAC voted to adopt, in some cases, a more stringent requirement for winning a letter. The baseball requirement, for example, will be 14 innings of play rather than one full game.
