After handily polishing off the Fordham Rams in their initial encounter of the season, Coach Ellie Noyes' charges ran into trouble in Van Cortlandt Park, to finish third in a quadrangular meet with Pittsburgh, Yale, and Columbia. The opposing teams finished in that order, with five boys from the Smoky City crossing the finish line together, linked fraternally arm in arm, for an overwhelming victory. The best the Dartmouth runners were able to do was ninth and tenth, with Mike Morrissey and George Rosenberg finishing in that order. Walter Clarkson finished in 14th position, Wallace Ashnault in 22nd, and Sam Daniell and Tom Rinter came in 23rd and 24th respectively. The Indian harriers had a punishing blow in their competition for second place in the meet when Captain Stan Smiley, their strongest runner, was forced to drop out at the end of three miles. If Smiley had been up to his usual form, the Green might have crowded Yale for second place, although they would still have been a long way from first.
