40th REUNION-JUNE 13, 14, 15, 1952
Below you will find the names of the loyal classmates who contributed to the 1951 Alumni Fund. That list emphasizes the hard work of Eddie Luitwieler and his Alumni Fund Committee. Again the class acknowledges its gratitude to them.
By the end of December those who desire to participate in the Class Memorial Fund must act. It is Henry Van Dyne's hope and purpose to raise an additional $9000 so that by the time of our 40th Reunion next June the Class Memorial Fund will amount to $25,000.
Jim Steen has been appointed chairman of our 40th Reunion Committee. He will be ably assisted at Hanover by Babe Hartshorn and Roy Lewis. Now is the time to plan for your attendance at this reunion.
Elmer H. Phelps '19, brother of John H.Phelps, our first classmate to be lost by death on September 15, 1911, has written that he and his family are donating a Memorial Book to the Dartmouth Library in memory of our classmate. I have written Elmer Phelps expressing the deep appreciation of the entire Class.
From Mort Kyle comes word that Webb(Robert E.) Brown is located for a time at Morton's guest house, 262 Court Street, Plymouth, Mass. He is in government textile procurement work covering New England territory.
Mark Reed spent a long six months' summer at Boothbay Harbor, Me. Last winter was spent in London and Paris where Mark had a busman's holiday seeing about 40 plays. He reports: "The British theatre is going strong from the West End to Stratford to the small provincial houses. No austerity in that department."
Dick Plumer and his wife escaped the summer's heat of Orlando, Fla., by a trip to New England and Canada. On their way through Newmarket, N. H., they looked up Jim Griffin, who reports that he and his wife had a most enjoyable visit with the Plumers.
After 37 years with R. R. Donnelley & Sons in Chicago, Elmer Chapman retired the first of last July as Personnel Director of that company. He had a coronary in 1947 from which he completely recovered, but decided he might live longer if he started taking it easier at 62 instead of 65. His plans for the future are indefinite, but, for the time being, he and his wife are remaining in their home at Homewood, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, near his son and two grandchildren.
Henry Viets spent the summer in Maine, returning the middle of September, and going back to his office on a half-time basis.
During the summer Connie Snow paid a visit to the Luitwieler's home on Cape Cod. When they telephoned Syd Clark they learned that he had had a heart attack and is under doctor's orders to "take it easy."
