Business before pleasure. As of October 16, the class response to Rod Walser's dues drive had only reached the 50% mark. That is not 50% of the class, which would be an entirely satisfactory situation, but 50% of the minimum. What minimum? Well, as some of you may have realized, you've been getting the ALUMNI MAGAZINE right along whether you paid your dues or not. Rod has figured out the lowest number of payees which can carry an entire class subscription to the MAGAZINE. If 1945 can get 400 members to pay their dues, then the remaining 338 will get their subscriptions regardless of whether they pay their dues or not. The idea being, of course, to keep all class members in touch with Dartmouth via the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. It is obvious then, that 338 of our brethren are getting a "free ride" and are enjoying their MAGAZINE at the expense of the rest of us. We feel, however, that they will gradually realize that they are no better than alumni parasites and will pitch in to carry their own load. And when Rod wrote me on October 16, only 200 of you had paid your dues. We only had reached 50% of our minimum. If we don't get the necessary 400, then those of you who don't pay your dues will be without your ALUMNI MAGAZINE, a most lamentable situation. Therefore, if you haven't paid up, send your money to Rod today. It's not too late and it's only $4.00. It certainly would be wonderful if all 738 members of the class paid in full. But more important, pull your own Weight. Cooperate! If you enjoy reading the ALUMNI MAGAZINE as much as I do, you'll miss it if it doesn't come with its monthly regularity. Don't let it happen to you. Act now!

And now to the news. Charlie Widmayer, editor of this MAGAZINE, has requested that class secretaries hold their December columns down to "modest length" so that the lists of Alumni Fund contributors can be added. His request couldn't have come at a more opportune time, for I just don't have much news to report anyway. How about some help, gentlemen? I can't write a column if I don't have anything to write about.

What I do have, however, is one or two momentous announcements. Those of you who were at reunion will undoubtly remember Pat Perkins. We all told Cliff Cosgrove that he should marry the girl so that we could see her at every reunion. And according to the announcement I have here, Cliff is going to do just that. In fact, he and Pat should be blissfully joined as of now, for November 7 was the date set for the wedding. Pat graduated from Middlebury College in 1949 and was modeling in New York when she was captured by Cliff, a crime specialist for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co.

Wah-hoo-Waaaaaas to Bill McNeely and wife for their first child, Anne Gersham, born on September 27. Anyway, Bill, she can marry a Dartmouth man.

Loving Wood and Jim Broderick found time to spend a weekend in Hanover this fall. They brought their wives like all good Dartmouth men and undoubtedly took in the Syracuse game. Some people have all the luck.

A sad reminder that "in the midst of li£e we are in death." Rod Sweeney, serving in the Marine Corps, has returned to the U.S. under tragic circumstances. His wife Kathe and son, Erick Brian were in an auto accident last September and young Erick lost his life. Kathe was seriously injured but is recovering. My sympathies, Rod, and X speak for all your 1945 classmates at Dartmouth.

News from Johnny Brooks, who is at present taking a year of surgery at Maiden Hospital, Maiden, Mass. He apologizes for not making the sth reunion but promises to be on deck for the 10th. Consider yourself listed, Johnny. Also, those of you who live around Boston and in the future have need of an obstetrician, plan on the Boston Lying-in Hospital where, after this year, Johnny will be "operating."

A while ago, I wrote Bebe Miller a letter and since then have been wondering why he hadn't answered. The reason has been neatly explained by Bebe's wife. He has been in the thick of things in Korea as a Navy doctor with the Marine Corps. Catherine assures me that the reason he has not written me is that he is a bit busy. You're excused, Bebe.

And that is all the news I have, gentlemen. Please don't wait for me to call on you. Write me. Here's December's list of correspondents. If your name appears here, don't fail me. Jim Doole, Bob Dyer, Ray Fontana, Bob HaftenTeffer, George Hunsicker, Jim Knowles, Bob Loomis, Dave Mott, Johnny Pine, Rupe Ray, Val Schuler and Bob Hanson. A card is all that is necessary. Merry Christmas to all.
