The East-West Shrine Football Game played in San Francisco every year prompts the Dartmouth men to assemble during the holidays and pay homage to a grand coach. "Tuss" McLaughry can now be considered a regular on the coaching staff for the East team, and along with "Tuss" we get one or two players; this year John Clayton '51 and BobMcCraney '51. All three warmed the hearts of everyone at our Christmas Party Dinner, December 27 at the University Club—an attendance of seventy alumni, students home for the holidays, fathers, and future Dartmouth men.
John and Bob combined on the quarterback job for the East the following Saturday in an excellent manner. The press gave fine reports but it wasn't in the cards for the East to win this year (any more than California was to win in the Rose Bowl). As for "Tuss" personally, the Bay Area newspapers have nice things to say about him every year. Some coaches are criticized when they lose a game. Possibly some Dartmouth alumnus "blew his top" when we lost to Lehigh or Cornell or even Princeton. If such a feeling exists, however, it must be far from San Francisco as not one at our dinner had anything but praise for the job "Tuss" is doing for our boys and public relations at Hanover.
Present at the dinner were:
Alumni: '07—Kimball; '09—Gould; 'lo—wilkinson; '13—Wilson; '14—Washburn; '15—livingston, Tomfohrde; '18—Lawler; '20—Winslow; '21—Garfein,Keyes, '18-Wallick; '22—Bunnell; '23—McKown,Townsend; '24—Flint; '25—Kelsey; '26—Bellaire, Des Marais, Nigh, Smith; '27—Howes; '28—Lathrop, Taylor; '30—Faye; '31—Lull; '32—Ward; '33—Allen; '34—Howland; '35—Smith; '36—Drechsel; '38—Macey, Slattery; '40—Kenney, Rideout; '41—Carter, Chimiklis, Danforth, White; '42—Clark, Stewart; '43—Bingham; '44—Reyn-olds; '45—Miller; '48—Smith; and '51—Ten-nyson.
Students: '45—Washburn; '51—Hatfield, Miller, Schneider, Tomfohrde; '52—Reynolds; '53—McCrea, McKown; '54—Biggs, Kelsey, and Nash.
In addition to the above, fathers Biggs, Nash, Reynolds, Hatfield, and McCrea put in an appearance, with McCrea bringing along another son who should be ready for Dartmouth in a year or two. Young Bill Nigh Jr. was there getting his first impression of our alumni group spirit and Jack Palmer from Berkeley High and Marshall Hoffman from Menlo School, the latter two applicants for entrance next fall and both bringing along their fathers to convince them that Dartmouth is the school (if you can get in).
Our Christmas Party was made more enjoyable this year through the willingness of our talented musicians to render service. A blue ribbon to undergraduate Michael Biggs, '54 at the piano—another to McCrea Sr. (although a California graduate) for his singing, and also one for our own Des Marais '26 for his inimitable rendition of Eleazar. Prize money is insufficient to appease the Trio chorus, PeteKelsey '26 and the Smith brothers, '26 and '35. A Wah-Hoo-Wah also for "V. P." Dave as our Director of Music and congratulations to President Bob Allen '33 as Master of Ceremonies. Oh, yes, a short yell for Alumni Councillor, Lincoln Wilson '13 for his speech of exactly twenty seconds duration.
