EAST-WEST SHRINE GAME-Early in December "Tuss" McLaughry was selected to assist Andy Kerr, coach of the East team for the Shrine Game.... next the selection of Dartmouth's Dale Armstrong and Joe Sullivan for the team then the arrival of the entire Eastern squad in San Francisco, December 20. Lucky we had Tuss along. If there is a better publicity director for Dartmouth, let us see him. After days of headlines recognizing each player on the East squad, the final day finds Dale and Joe in there to start the game, and now comes New Year's Day .... RAIN .... lots of rain .... and then it stopped at 2 p.m. for the balance of the day. The teams and the sea gulls took over Kezar Stadium with a kick-off resembling a Transpacific plane off for Honolulu, last dry ball seen all day. Shortly all players look alike .... no more numbers, but you couldn't fool the Dartmouth alumni on the 50-yard line when they saw Joe Sullivan make his second interception of the day which set up the East immediately for its winning touchdown.
DINNER FOR TUSS McLAUGHRY-On Tuesday evening, December 28, Dartmouth men turned out for one of the best attended affairs ever held in San Francisco. After dinner, Tuss McLaughry, Joe Sullivan and Dale Armstrong and over 85 alumni talked over Dartmouth's athletic situation with conclu- sion that everything is on a sound basis at Hanover. Yes, even A1 Dickerson's department. If they are all like Dale and Joe we'll be OK.
DARTMOUTH TABLE AT SHRINELUNCHEON—On December 30 all players, coaches, and friends of the East and West, an attendance of over 1000, gathered at the Palace Hotel for luncheon and a general get-together before the game. Through our Association Prexy, Jack Baer '17, a reserved table bearing the Dartmouth placard took care of alumni right down front next to the press. Included at our table was Joe Sullivan's Dad, all the way from Webster, Mass., and our Ogden visitor, W. R. Kimball '07.
REGULAR WEEKLY LUNCHEONS-On January 5 our regular weekly luncheon went to expanded proportions, from the averge 21 to over 60 Dartmouth men, expecting BillMcCarter '19 from Hanover, as well as Tuss who stayed over to carry out his duties as Secretary of the American Football Coaches Association convention here. Bill got stuck in the snow at Grand Island, Nebraska, even as our boys on the way back to college took up residence in Cheyenne and way points. The following telegram speaks for itself: "Meteorological vagaries have unstreamlined me. Regret to pull Miss Otis on your friendly gathering, signed, Bill McCarter." Tuss saved the day, however, and brought along two of his assistant coaches who were attending the convention here, Milt Piepul and John Dell Isold, all giving a good account of themselves.
After two days Bill and 25 others found their way back to Omaha where of all things, a plane was about to take off for San Francisco, so they came on to wind up affairs of the NCAA. Good to see our Director of Athletics, but we'll have to wait until next time to call out the guard.
