The 44th annual dinner meeting was held at the Engineers' Club in Philadelphia on May 4. President Parker F. Soule Jr. '31 called the business meeting to order at 6 P.M. Fol- lowing the reading and approval of the min- utes, the secretary reported that during the preceding year, seven activities were held by the Club. Other reports were made by BillMackinney '32, treasurer; George Farrington '12, for the membership round-up committee; and Jack Young '47 for the Softball team.
The report of the nominating committee was made by its chairman, Dr. George A.Hahn '32. The nominations were approved as presented, without other nominations from the floor, and the following were re-elected: President, Parker F. Soule Jr. '31; Vice-President, Victor C. Smith '17; Secretary, JosephM. Flounders '47; Treasurer, William R. Mackinney '32. William Olmstead '38 was elected to the executive committee as a member atlarge for a three-year term.
President Soule, reporting in the absence of Jack Heston '28, Alumni Councillor, stated that in this area 266 candidates made application for the class of 1955. Of these, 250 were interviewed. As of April 30, 95 had been accepted, w hich represents 42% of the applicants interviewed. These figures were not final because the second group of acceptances had not yet been published.
Following the business meeting and cocktails, those assembled sat down to a delicious roast beef dinner. The thoroughly enjoyable climax of the meeting was a highly interesting speech by the College Treasurer, John F.Meek '33. Those of us who might have been laboring under the misapprehension that the Treasurer's post is a dull but terrifying land of bonds, accounts, budgets and deficits were wrong. Those particular considerations enter the Treasurer's picture, to be sure; but John Meck's area of responsibility is too large, busy and diversified to be dull. He's concerned with everything from tree spraying in Hanover to rent control in Brooklyn (once upon a time someone willed the College some real estate in that celebrated borough). His anecdotes regarding the quaint and curious provisions of some of the endowment funds were delightful.
The Class of '28 in Philadelphia did it again! With seven of its members at the meeting, that class had the largest delegation present.
THE PHILADELPHIA CLUB at its 44th annual meeting welcomed College Treasurer John F. Meek '33 as the main speaker on May 4. Shown with him (I to r) are the re-elected officers: William Housel '42 and James Tindle '36, executive committee; Parker Soule Jr. '31, president; Mr. Meek; Victor Smith '17, vice-president; Joseph Flounders '47, secretary; William Mackinney '31, treasurer.
