After three straight setbacks the Dartmouth football team had to win this one, but Rutgers, with a record of one tie and two defeats, was also determined to gain an initial triumph for the season, and for a time it looked as if they might do just that.

The game was about as ragged a contest as this observer has seen this fall. Both teams missed several scoring opportunities and fumbles were numerous. Dartmouth fumbled seven times and lost the ball on five of these. The Scarlet forces fumbled four times and lost the ball on each occasion. On another play Dartmouth end Fred Fedeli intercepted a pass near midfield and went streaking for the goal line with no one near him. Then Fedeli lost his footing and fell and there went the scoring opportunity. Rutgers had a pass in the end zone which should have gone for a TD but end Russ Sandlom let it slip through his fingers.

The Big Green jumped to an early lead, four minutes after the opening, when Rut- gers had the ball on their own 5-yard line. The Scarlet halfback Steve Johnson took the ball in the end zone and was hit there by Dartmouth end Clark Murphy for a safety and the Big Green had two points. At this point both teams stalled, but in the closing minutes of that quarter the Big Green started to march and climaxed a 40-yard drive when Jim Miller passed to Dave McLaughlin for the first Dartmouth touchdown.

Midway in the second period Rutgers got into the ball game when Jack Jeffers hit the Scarlet's All-American end Russ Sandblom with a pass in the end zone. Minutes later Dartmouth scored again. This time Jeffers' pass, intended for Sand- blom, went awry and Clark Murphy, who played a whale of a defensive game for the Indians, snatched the ball and raced 37 yards to keep the Big Green in the lead.

Rutgers appeared not the least discon- certed by this score and as the clock ticked towards halftime, they moved downfield once again. Halfback Steve Johnson went wide around end for a first down, fullback Tom Duncan ground out another first down, and a Jeffers pass to Johnson put the ball on the Dartmouth 6-yard line. From there a pass from Jeffers to Sand- blom gave Rutgers their second score of the day.

As the second half got underway the Indians got another break when Jeffers fumbled the ball on the Rutgers 35-yard line and Joe Mesics recovered for the Green. Dartmouth moved to the Rutgers 2-yard line in three plays, lost 15 on a penalty, and then Miller tossed to Dave McLaughlin in the end zone for another Indian score. Two minutes later, following the kickoff, Rutgers fumbled again on their own 25- yard line. Clark Murphy recovered, and Dartmouth quarterback Ross Ellis, substituting for Miller, passed to end Dave Thielscher on the Rutgers 6-yard line from which point Dick Collins raced across for the final Dartmouth score. Caswell converted for Darmouth to make it three out of four for the day. And that was just about the game.

Early in the final quarter Rutgers moved downfield again and halfback Joe Triggs crashed over from the 6-yard line for their final score. But despite Jeffers' desperation passes for the remainder of the game, the Indian defense tightened and Rutgers still had a victory to gain this season.

AT WEST POINT: Halfback Dick Collins carries for Dartmouth. Behind him is halfback Russ Smale, and also shown are Jack Godfrey (59), Parker Caswell (72) and Dave Thielscher (83).
