News, straight up. From Karl “Sven” Steinmanis: “I rarely write about myself for our Class Notes in the Alumni Mag but I thought I would inform that I retired January 1 from Procter & Gamble’s legal division after 35 years there. My last 15 years were as associate general counsel of global paper products in charge of the worldwide legal affairs of this product group (products like Pampers, Bounty, Charmin, etc.). The career at P&G Legal was terrific and took me to all parts of the world. My wife, Anda, and I (coming up in October to 35 years of marriage) plan on keeping our home in Cincinnati but spending more time at our other home in Naples, Florida. Visiting our two daughters more is also in the plan—our oldest, Laura, is an event planner in Los Angeles who does big Hollywood parties and weddings and our youngest, Marisa, is a sophomore at Skidmore planning on spending a semester abroad in Melbourne, Australia. I’m looking forward to visiting Hanover this fall for Homecoming (I remember it being called house parties in our time) as I haven’t been back for at least 10 years.”

Jeff Dahlman reports that he has accepted the position of Bartlett Tower Society gift planning chair for our class. The society is “the College’s program to recognize individuals who have included Dartmouth in their estate plans. There is no minimum dollar amount. In a nutshell, you must name Dartmouth as a non-contingent beneficiary in your will, a life insurance policy, a retirement plan or a planned gift at any percentage, and then send a copy of the operative provision to the gift planning office. These gifts represent one-third of all gifts received by the College.”

And from Scott Holland: “As I write this I am not, unfortunately, sitting under a palm on the Andaman Sea drinking ‘beer Chang’ and admiring bikini-clad young tourist ladies. Rather, I decided to be diagnosed with lung cancer about a week before Thanksgiving. I had surgery in mid-December and, as I write, am about halfway through chemotherapy. Fortunately, it was caught early and the prognosis is good. I will be eligible for two double blind clinical trials following conventional treatment as well. So I have a very positive attitude and am looking forward. On a completely different subject, not being on Samui afforded me the opportunity to attend a fully costumed and staged performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance presented by the Glee Club in Spaulding with a live orchestra. It was extremely well done, even the acting, and I enjoyed it very much. (Was the Glee Club ever other than 100 percent professional? Think spring tour.) PRZ was either spinning in his grave or, more likely, applauding from the rear of the hall. Finally, if you happen to be in Hanover and haven’t tried Lou’s key lime pie, it is worth the trip but be sure to go early in the lunch hour.”

Get well soon, Scott!
