Well, it's June again and the crisp warm summer breezes are just blowing in from the far-off Sierra Madre Mountains. Speaking of Sierra Madres, it is rumored that Mar Mullen is planning a turkey shoot in the mountains in the near future. This may not be authentic, however, since a scrubby homing pigeon brought me the news.
It is fantastic to think that our first anniversary is soon arriving, and with it come the many interesting tales that we have received from all of the '51ers since their embarkation last June 17. For most of us, I am sure, he year has given us a slightly better realization of marvelous experience that our Hanover life was and what the Dartmouth spirit means to all of us. It is amazing to us hoW almost every letter that we have received has in some way expressed upon the part of its writer the desire to be back, in Hanover for another four years. Well, after all, I guess it won't be too long before we're on the plain again.
The Home Front
Oscar Blomgren heads up this month's list 0f those tripping over the bumblebees with his marriage to Priscilla Anne Perry. Priscilla is a Portland, Me., gal and is a graduate of the Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, where she was head of the bacteriology department. Oscar and Priscilla were wise in choosing the White Church in Hanover for the scene of their marriage. The newlyweds are now making their nest in Evanston, Ill.
Dorothea Lorey and Ken Smith aren't married as yet but their engagement was recently announced, or rather I should say, back in December. Dorothea is completing her educational career at the Cedarcrest College in Allen town, Pa., where she is quite active in campus life, and Ken is with the United States Navy somewhere in the Pacific. Let's hope the day of rejoining is not too far off and that a few '51ers may be on hand for the nuptials.
Somebody once said that spring is the time when a young man's fancy lightly turns to love. However, this month's marriage returns are a good deal off, and therefore contradicting slightly the age-old belief in the validity of this theory. However, I suppose along about July or August we will be hearing of the scads and scads of you roving giants who were married in the spring or wed in the wood.
Al Katz couldn't wait 'til spring to marry Jean Rogers, and therefore did it back in February. Mrs. Katz is from Highland Park, N. J., and was recently graduated from the New Jersey College for Women. The last word was that she was working for the American Foreign Insurance Association in New York City and Al was working for the Pennsylvania Company. Congratulations to you married wonders.
Speaking down the engaged alley, we find Dick Barnes, who was engaged back in December, to Helen Glassey. We don't know whether we mentioned this one or not but will admit to scatterbrainness and mention it again. Helen is a Smith miss and Dick is a Navy gob or ensign.
Charlie Collins should have been mentioned as being married because he was, on March 16 to Barbara Cole. Green Mountain was Barb's alma mater and she also attended a secretarial school in Boston, where she is employed by the Rustcraft Company. Charlie is also working in Boston, doing what, we don't know. It won't be long now for BillRugg, who recently announced his engagement to Joyce Rawlins. Bill, of course, was in the Navy program at school and is now an ensign in the Navy and is stationed at Norfolk, Va. Joyce is from the Far West, San Diego, no less. Helen Ferry is the very fortunate bride-to-be of Pete Bixby. It's rumored that the wedding is planned for sometime this summer, and, as we know, Pete is just now completing his .second year in the Tuck-Thayer course.
Earl Tyler, who has recently been studying at Boston University Law School, enlisted in the Army in January and is now stationed at the base in Sampson, N. Y. Somebody sent us a beautiful picture of Joe O'Connor in his Marine uniform, and I only wish it were in such shape that we could reproduce it here. The last we heard of Joe was late in February when he was taking recruit training at the Marine base in Parris Island, S. C. Speaking of Joe reminds us that we just heard that BillMcFadden, also with the Marines, is now fighting in the front lines somewhere in Korea. A Wah-Hoo-Wah to both Bill and Joe from all of us. Speaking of Charlie Collins reminds us that a spy has reported that he and his new wife were in Hanover for several days last month. He just can't keep away. Also lucky enough to get back to Hanover was PeteLittle, who was there for four or five days in February.
Woody Klein wrote sometime back requesting a plug for the gang at Columbia. It seems to me that we have previously mentioned some of the '51s there but here is Woody's recap. Don Gold is following the psychology path; Joe Spond continues in economics and business; Ralph Watkins, Sam Chu, LloydMiller are journalizing it; Harry Boyce was there; and Bob Pack devotes his studies to English literature. Bob is also holding down a full-time job with C. J. LeRoche Advertising Company. Also in advertising, married, and at Columbia is Bing Broido—Bing must be busy.
Incidentally, Woody conducted an interesting poll involving the future of spring football practice. Of course it's now out in Hanover, but Woody reports five out of six of a large group of football captains contacted wanted spring practice.
Reg Miner '21 was kind enough to send along the clipping of Anne Piatt's engagement to Bob Moore. The big news was announced back in March. Anne is an Endicott grad, and Bob is now working as a loan administrator with William Iselin & Company of New York.
A wonderful letter from Jim Bovaird tells us of his enlisting last July, along with Dick Patton, Tom Barnett and Jack Shewes. After basic training Jim and company ended up in Fort Devens for further research, to be exact, the Army Security Agency School- sounds like one of these long-winded names where the men sit and poke holes out of the doughnuts all day. Jim writes that his thoughts concerning the possibilities of going overseas and his thoughts of Hanover—he puts it much better than I could—"far more important than the thoughts of war and overseas duty is that we are still within striking distance of Hanover."
Also, news from the East reports that FredSwanson graduated March 21 from Naval Officers Training School at Newport. From Newport to Florida for a leave and then to San Diego for further work. Incidentally, Dave Wiggins just left for Newport and the Navy program. Dave writes that he is working hard but that the East is full of '51ers.
Well, off to print now. Best to all until next fall.
