I had a telephone call recently from Clarence McDavitt '00 inquiring into the status of Norton as a football player. A friend of McDavitt's is writing a history of College football and was in doubt about Norton. I was able to assure him that Norton was a member of the Varsity eleven in 1890 and his name and picture appear in the '91 Aegis.

This brought to mind the tragic end of Norton. He was probably one of the most popular members of '90. He was very fond of athletics and outdoor sports but not a lover of books. He managed to get by for three years but did not receive sufficient standing to enable him to graduate. A few years later his death was reported. His body was found by the Coast Guard in Florida and investigation showed that he was killed by bullets. The mystery was never cleared up. There was no apparent reason for suicide and he had no known enemies. It was a tragic ending for a nice guy.

I talked with Canty a tew days ago, and found him well and as active as an octogenarian can be expected to be. As he is 88, he may well be the first of the Class to reach the age of 90. We hope so.
