Sometimes it looks as though the only connection we have with Dartmouth is a financial one. In the spring we're exhorted to give all we can and more to the Alumni Fund. Along comes the fall and, lo and behold, another currency campaign; this time from the class treasurer. Wonder if it's' worth it? Of course, my answer is in the affirmative. I think it is well worth it to maintain contact with Dartmouth and with you. I read the ALUMNI MAGAZINE from cover to cover, even my own drivel. But maybe some of you think differently. You're tired of receiving notices of money wanted here, cash needed there—I don't blame you. If your only contact is a financial one, then you're not getting your money's worth. But wait a minute; this isn't a one-way proposition. The fact that you contribute to the Alumni Fund or pay your class dues doesn't mean that Dartmouth or the Class of 1945 is obligated to provide you with entertainment. Both are extremely grateful, but Dartmouth's alumni are too widespread; our class is too large. Neither can interest you directly unless you want to be interested. Those of you who are active in Dartmouth affairs know what I mean. It takes some effort, although not much, to get out and attend a Dartmouth Club meeting or a class get-together. If you do, you'll enjoy it, and you'll find yourself more attracted by the invisible bond which binds Dartmouth men together. You'll experience once again the Dartmouth spirit. You'll be an active part of Dartmouth. That "check-book cousin feeling will be subordinated by a sense of fellowship. The financial connection will seek its proper place as an important but not all-important link with your College. Try it the next time you get a chance! You'll see what I mean.

Jim Doole spent an interesting six weeks this summer barnstorming all over Japan with the Hawaiian All-Stars baseball team. The Punahou School paper gives an interesting account of these peregrinations, and Jim, who compiled a 4-1 pitching record, says that the Japanese are "quite well-dressed, healthy, and well-fed" despite the country's apparent economic problems. "Believe it or not," says Jim, "we could purchase a complete filet mignon dinner for only one dollar!"

And don't think that '45's Dartmouth delegation isn't holding its own. Fred Berthold and Laura increased Hanover's population when, on September 16, a son appeared at the Mary Hitchcock Hospital. Bob Allen was right behind him, for on September 21, the Aliens received congratulations on the birth of Martha Winchester Allen, at Mary Hitchcock. Incidentally, Bob and Carol nowlive at 3 Elm St., the old place just wasn't big enough.
