Time certainly rolls around quickly. Seems as if I've just finished writing one column when it's time for another. They always seem to be due. Due! That reminds me. It's not too late to answer that annual call for $4.00. Dues are due again and you can greatly aid your faithful slave Rod Walser by sending your yearly investment in Dartmouth and '45 along to him post haste.
Speaking of money, it's my sad duty to inform you that Don Campbell, pressed by the necessities of business and family, both of which are rapidly expanding, he says, has found it necessary to resign as Class Agent. I don't quite know how to thank Don for all he has done. His job, as you probably all realize, is a thankless but absolutely necessary one, both to our class and to Dartmouth College. For three years, Don has worked faithfully to fulfill our obligations to the College, and, we'll all agree, has succeeded admirably. We may not have reached our monetary quota, but we have consistently stood near the top of our class group. And none of our neighboring classes have stood higher than we. This record is a tribute to Don and his assistant class agents. I, and I'm sure you too, hate to see him go, but three years in that position, the most difficult in the class, is enough. The hard work, the ground work that he has done will greatly enable his successor to carry on in the fine style that '45 is accustomed to. Thanks, Don, for a wonderful job.
I went to a football game awhile back and ran into, figuratively, two of '45's finest bachelors, Johnny MacDonald and Mo Frye. They were escorting handsome young ladies and seemed to be enjoying the game, B.U. vs. William and Mary. When I informed them of my coming matrimonial plans, they shook their heads in unison and made strange clucking noises. Mo muttered something about Benedict Arnold and "who could we trust now." John just shook my hand, and, as a tear rolled down his cheek, said "goodbye." Oh well, I said as I walked away, there'll come a day. It happens to the best of us. Monday, through the mail, I received my unconditional release from the '45 Bachelor Club.
Saw Jim Broderick and wife Barbara and George Pierce and Allon at a party some days ago. Come to think of it, it was my party. Also have heard from Barney Oldfield. Seems as though he's been a mite busy lately what with bringin' in the harvest and such. The boy's a farmer besides a sales engineer. Such versatility! And as if that wasn't enough, he plans on being a father around Christmas time. Says Santa Claus will be sporting white wings and a yellow beak this year. Might say Barney's spring plantin' is showin' a good return. His thumb always looked a little green although most of us thought it was gangrene.
A few odds'n ends from here and there: CliffCosgrove has been appointed business manager of the George Washington University. He had been with Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in New York for two and one half years previous to becoming associated with the University. 1st Lt. Ed Wilson is now in Germany, serving with the 2nd Armored Division. His unit is part of the NATO Army and has been conducting training maneuvers in the U.S. Zone of Occupation. The engagement of Miss Sara Louise Morris of Pittsburgh to Mr. Maurice W. Baruth was anounced last September. Hmmmm .. . guess I'd better cross Maury off my list. And wait 'til Frye and MacDonald hear about it. A spring wedding is planned. Dick Hewlett has received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Chicago. He is a program analyst with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. And, finally, my Hanover spy reports the present of Ed Smith and spouse and Ed Riley and Alice on the Hanover Plain enjoying fall foliage. "Oh to be at Dartmouth now that autumn's there.". .. or something. Apologies to Robert Browning.
And that is that for this effort, except for a short, very short, reminder: dues are due, due it today.
Send me news. I'm dying from lack of vital information; otherwise known as Nonew's disease.
