In compliance with the request of the Editor to keep the class notes as concise as possible in this issue because of space required to list Alumni Fund contributors, our class news must be brief. However, it is worth recording here at this time, the following story about a rare memorial to our classmate, Dr. Arthur Hopkins, published in the Manchester Union, October 9:
"A unique monument has been erected in the farthest corner of Oak Hill cemetery in West Swanzey to mark the final resting place of one of the last of the old local country doctors, Dr. Arthur W. Hopkins, who served the people of this town as doctor, School Board member, and member of the Board of Health for many years. He came to this community in 1903. His wife who survived him by only three weeks is buried beside him. The monument, a memorial to them both, was designed by their daughter, Dr. Faith Hopkins Bayer of Pennsburg, Pa.
"Carved on one side of the monument is a replica of the Hopkins school in North Swanzey, which was named in his honor in 1935. Said to be one of the few schools ever named after a person while living, it was always dear to the doctor's heart and will be perpetuated forever in granite because of his daughter's thoughtfulness.
"On her mother's side of the stone is a replica of the old Baptist Meeting House in West Swanzey where Mrs. Hopkins sang in the choir. The work on the monument which took many weeks to complete was done by a Dutch stone carver in Pennsburg on Vermont granite.
"Many persons from Swanzey and surrounding towns have visited the grave, a short way from the old cemetery where Denman Thompson of 'The Old Homstead' fame lies buried."
A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the men of '99 and all their kin!
