June 1953 WARDE WILKINS, GEORGE STEELE

George H. Stiles and Grace sailed on May 6 for a European trip and will not return in time for the Fortunate Fortieth. George, having retired from the Naval Reserve, is now the Washington, D. C., representative of Palmer and Baker, Consulting Engineers and Naval Architects of Mobile, Ala.

Eric Foster, of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, Department of Biochemistry, is not going to be able to be in Hanover in June. He is hoping the reunion will be a great success for all able to be there.

The April visitors at the Hanover Inn included the Bill Terrys and the Rae Bronks-preview for June.

Joe Cheney's son John, a major returned from Korea, is at Fort Rucker, Ala., and Joe and Hazel are spending much time there or having John and his family with them in Tallahassee, Fla. The trip North in June will have to be postponed. He tells of a pleasant and unexpected visit from Nor and Dot Catterall, and Nor sent from New Orleans a snapshot to show the Cheneys in good health and happy.

Sid and Lillian Akerstrom have a new address in Littletn, N. H.- 14 Jackson St., where they moved on May 1. Lillian's mother's illness will keep them away from the reunion. Sid is with the Hunkins and Eaton Agency (insurance) and represents Harold McAllister's New Hampshire Fire Insurance Co.

From Bob More comes a booklet written by him. Growing Evergreens in the Rocky Mountain Area. Evidently it was presented at the 8th Midwestern Shade Tree Conference in Denver in February 1953. The cover shows a truly beautiful color print of a Gray Gleam Rocky Mt. Juniper. Starting from scratch about 20 years ago with great interest but little knowledge, of his subject, Bob read, sweated, dug and transplanted on his "project." This latter was partly at his Denver home, partly on a half-acre rented from a local nurseryman and lastly at Glenmore, Buffalo Park, Colo., where Bob has a 100-acre plot and summer home at 7000 ft. altitude. On a sunny February day at Glenmore the thermometer rose to 72 and two nights later fell to 27° below 0°. Bob lists 230 varieties of fir, cypress, juniper, spruce, pine, Douglas fir, sequoia, yew, arbor vitae and hemlock that he had found out the hard way will grow. Mose Linscott is sure Bob's hobby lias had a beneficial effect on removing some of his surplus lard.

Lloyd Riford and T. M. Staples of Auburn, N. Y., own a registered Guernsey cow which has completed a production record of 10,497 pounds of milk and 530 pounds of butterfat in 10 months on three milkings daily at two years.

Dear Warde: Jest like I told you. that cold weather didn't last. We've had the spring freshets and Mink Brook is down to normal agin. The State Highway Dept. is out fixin pot holes in the rodes and they aint no reason why all that starts wunt git here. Remember when we fust cum how you cum by the Bawston & Maine or walked? Well, the Bawston & Maine still runs, they is Buses, Airoplanes, and moar rodes to drive a ortermobile on then you kin shake a stick at-with overpasses, underpasses and bypasses. Jest git here, Fred Harvey."

The George Watts now have a possible trip to France and Italy as George has a sabbatical leave for the first semester, so they may miss the reunion and take in the 45th and then the 50th.

When you read this Jane Wilson will be Mrs. Charles Shaw. Mr. and Mrs. LincolnSquires Wilson announced the marriage of their daughter Jane Philbrook to Mr. Charles Michael Shaw on Saturday, May 16, at four o'clock, Church of Saint Matthew Episcopal, San Mateo, Calif. Reception immediately followed the ceremony at the California Golf Club. Line and Lucy will also now be leaving for Hanover, the Alumni Council Meeting and the Fortunate Fortieth.

Check this list against last month's—get your old roommate if he isn't on either. It really is now later than you think. The tax is to be announced about May 5 and will purposely be held at a minimum not to include fancy do-funnies of any kind. We now add: Howard Blanchard, Mose and Bertha Ewing, Gumbart, Walt and Loretta Haley, Wright and Martha Hugus, Brig Knight, Don Mason perhaps, George McClary hopes, Clarence and Polly Meleney, Nolan. Ros and Una Powers, Chuck and Barbara Riley, Harry and Juanita Semmes, Chuck and Ruth Stone.

Bart and Renza Shepard drove to the Pacific coast in April to see Alan and his wife and baby. They are going to fly over to Hawaii and back while they are in Frisco. Ele Linscott has sailed to Italy to visit Johnny and wife and Mose is a bacheloi for the duration. Johnny has had many trips to Africa, Greece etc., while he's been stationed in Italy with the Navy Band.

It is not too late for your suggestions for Class Officers, Class Agent and other elective officers you will vote on at the class meeting Saturday morning, June 20, after the Class Picture is taken.

Have you sent in your Alumni Fund contribution? This is the year we should have 100% participation and show the alumni we can reune and make our quota. This was easy when some of our big givers were alive and sending checks that won Johnny Hansen Green Derbies year after year. If each does his little part George Steele, for his final year, can win a Green Derby. You can make it possible and only you. Are you willing to have George retire in a blaze of glory? Its easy if you do your part.

Gladstone Kellogg has been ill and, while now back at work part time, he will not be able to get to Hanover in June. He has had pleasant visits with Len Manley, who also is not to be allowed to leave California for the Fortieth. Both will be with us in spirit. You who are not kept at home should make the effort to be present. w. H. (Dutch) Cary is another putting off his return to Hanover until the 45th. A pair of serious operations put him out of circulation for a while, but now he is back part time, but not to participate in the 40th.

Lt. Col. Thomas L. Sullivan AUS is now retired and can be found at the old home address-24 Bogandale Rd., West Roxbury 32, Mass.
