At a recent meeting of its board of directors, Clark B. Bristol was elected secretary of the New Hampshire Fire Insurance Company. Clark has had many years of experience in the field of casualty insurance and is a former president of the Surety Underwriters Association of Massachusetts.

Hallam J. Clark, a member of the real estate department of the Holyoke Savings Bank, was appointed chairman of the initial gifts section of the 1953 Red Cross Fund Campaign in Holyoke. This is only one more of many civic responsibilities that Hal has shouldered in Holyoke and South Hadley for he is a former president of the Rotary club and the Lions club, a member of the executive committee of the Mt. Tom Council of Boy Scouts, chairman of the South Hadley Appeal Board and a town meeting member from one of the precincts in South Hadley. He also finds time to serve as president of the Holyoke Dartmouth club and to serve as trustee of the Holyoke Credit Bureau.

Carroll J. Lawler has left New York and his connection with the Jamestown Amusement Circuit to become general manager of the Hartford (Conn.) Theater Operating Circuit comprising five motion picture houses. From College, Carroll entered business with his father in the ownership and operation of three theaters in Greenfield, Mass., and has been affiliated ever since with the motion picture industry except for a four-year hitch during World War II and then he was entertainment officer for the Navy.

Joseph E. Talbot was named recently by President Eisenhower to be a member of the United States Tariff Commission. Joe, a practising attorney in Naugatuck, Conn., was a Republican representative from Connecticut in the Seventy-seventh, Seventy-eighth and Seventy-ninth Congresses. He has served, also, as Connecticut State Treasurer.

A vacancy occurred and right off Governor Herter invited Dr. Gaylord W. Anderson to return to Massachusetts as State Public Health Commissioner. Unfortunately for us in the state, Andy rejected the offer and will remain in Minnesota as that state's health commissioner.

Miss Ellen Hight has been elected vicepresident of the Boston Middlebury Alumnae for the coming year.

Sally Louise Carter and Elisha P. Gould have scheduled their wedding for May 16, which is a date in the future as these notes are being written. Nick will take his younger daughter down the aisle of the First Church Congregational of Swampscott, Mass. A reception will follow at the Tedesco Country Club in Marblehead.

It was a pleasant surprise to find WarrenDaniel at the Bangor airport waiting for the same plane I was planning to take to Boston one day in mid-April. We were able to be seated together on the plane and had a very pleasant visit. Dan recently has been made chief engineer for Great Northern Paper Company, the concern for which he has worked since graduation. Until promoted to his present post, Dan had gone up the ladder in the production end of the company.

That same day, soon after my return to the office, Gene Hotchkiss phoned to say he was in Boston for a short time and I was able to persuade him to drop in for a visit near the close of the afternoon. You will not be surprised that our talk was predominantly of Dartmouth with emphasis on the Bequest Program.

The very next day I was agreeably surprised to hear the voice of Jim Hamilton over the phone. He was in Boston for a brief stay. We hurriedly arranged for luncheon together and managed to get Carter Hoyt to join us. Again you will not be surprised that our conversation was principally related to Dartmouth with emphasis on the Alumni Fund.

Which reminds me that the figures to date as this column goes to press indicate that we have $10,000 to go to meet our quota. By the time this issue reaches you, further inroads will have been made but I know from the experience of prior years that there still will be a sizeable amount to be raised. Let's get to it and put it over. Give generously and give now.

Stan and Catherine Miner traveled to the West Coast and back recently as a businesspleasure trip. Very thoughtfully, Stan phoned me upon his return and supplemented the call with a letter. They enjoyed a dinner with Bunny and Gladys Bunnell, after which they accompanied the Bunnels to a reunion of fellow Manila internees. Stan talked by phone with Howie Almon in Los Angeles, with KarlBrooks in San Francisco and with Clyde Jensen in Seattle. He went to call upon Louis Gluek at his office next to his brewery in Minneapolis only to find Louis was out for a long lunch period. (Probably gone some distance to locale a bottle of Pabst Blue Ribbon.) Stan had hoped to have dinner with Jim Hamilton while in Minneapolis but Jim was on a trip. He even missed connections with Gene Hotchkiss in Chicago.

Have a pleasant summer.
