It is always a pleasure to write this first installment of our Class Notes. The summer, as usual, has been good to us newswise, and the demand for creativity is at low ebb. At this writing, your scribe is seated at a desk in the dormitory-like atmosphere of New York's Dartmouth Club, and the nearness of Dartmouth things and Dartmouth people sweeps away the veil of years and it seems that yesterday we trudged from Topliff to Lord under the watchful eye of the "Vigilanti," burdened down with sofa or chair.

Miscellaneously speaking, it was a busy summer for us. Bob Saidel, for instance, was busily traversing the Italian peninsula where he is assigned with the United States Information Service. Bob, now in Milan, has been in Italy for two years, and has been located in Rome and Naples previously. Last July Graziella Fontana, a fashion designer in Milan, became Mrs. Saidel.

Chet Gale is in the business of selling ceramic and metal coatings for the Bettinger Corporation in Milford, Mass. Chet recently completed his studies at the Harvard "B" School with fellow-fifty-five Roy Pfeil. Roy is in brand-management and advertising with Procter and Gamble. Don Aronson graduated with distinction from Columbia's Business School this past June. Don received the "New York State Society of Certified Public Accountant's Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Leadership" - which is quite a mouthful in addition to being a distinct honor. Don is currently associated with the Arthur C. Young Co.

Wayne Cliff, wife Margot and son Scott recently completed their three-year Navy tour and have settled in Montpelier, Vt., where Wayne is a staff member of the National Life Insurance Company.

Jim McKendry received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia this past June. BillMacurdy was awarded his master's degree in engineering from NYU after completing a two-year program of advanced study at the university's graduate center at Bell Laboratories.

Ralph Sautter sends news from Boston where he shares an apartment with Neil Hendyr '54. Ralph and Neil are employed by the Rockland Atlas National Bank of Boston. Ralph plans to marry Marie Elmer, a University of Massachusetts alumna, this December.

Larry Veator has completed Year One at Harvard "B," and worked with GE this summer. Dean Allard graduated from Georgetown last June with a Master of Arts degree, having majored in history. Bernie Fulton is still with the Federal Housing Administration as a field representative in Philadelphia. The Fulton family consists of Bernie's wife Delores and two-year-old daughter, who's name is unavailable at present. Roy Nyren was ordained as a Congregational minister this past June, having completed his studies at Yale Divinity School.

John Cavanagh received his master's degree in history from Columbia this past June. John's plans for the future are not available at this printing.

Before we get into matrimony once again, we do have two noteworthy additions to the fifty-five family. Dartmouth as an institution will benefit only indirectly from this increase in our number, but the morale of our distant successors will probably be bolstered by these two future Carnival Queens. The most recent arrival is Lorene Elizabeth - latest "edition" of the Mathewson clan. Lori, who was presented to Jody and Mary on June 28, will leave the educational and athletic ends of Dartmouth life to big brother, Kent. The Mathewsons reside in Short Hills, N. J., from whence Jody will commute to New York where he's a reporter with the Wall Street Journal. The Richard Hogarty's claim our next little queen, Susan Elizabeth, who joined sister Peggy and brother Mike on June 4. Dick recently completed his stud- ies for a master's degree in government ad- ministration at the Wharton School and will be working in Governor Meyner's office in New Jersey.

Harry Guenther and Nadine Holmes of Indianapolis were married this past June. Nadine is a graduate of Indiana University, Class of 1958. Harry and Nadine sailed for Beirut, Lebanon, on August 28 where he will be an assistant professor in the American University- there. Al Murray and Carolyn Smith were married this past May with several Dartmouth men assisting in the ceremony. Lou Miano was best man, Bernie Segal and Bob MacFadyn ushers at the affair. Carolyn graduated from Wellesley College last year, and Al recently completed his studies for a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard, and will teach at Lafayette this year.

Dr. Al Schwartz and Janice Segal became engaged this past summer. Janice is a senior at Jackson College, Tufts University, and Al is interning at the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence where he plans to specialize in neurology. Jim Lauber is engaged to Louise Haga of Teaneck, N. J. Louise is a graduate of Augsburg College in Minneapolis and is currently in the public relations department of ESSO Standard Oil Co. of New York. Jim has been with the sales department of the Behr-Maury Co. in Troy, N. Y., since completing his tour of duty with the 77th Airborne Specialist Forces.

Now, a more personal note. Tom Byrne and Patricia Ann Strickland of Valdosta, Ga., were engaged early this summer, and as of this printing are returning northward after their September 6 wedding. Ann is an alumna of Valdosta State College in Georgia, and a native of the "Peach State." The Byrnes will be located in Hartsdale, N. Y., while Tom completes his training program with the Telephone Company.

Having turned over a new leaf, and produced this collum ahead of time for a change, I feel that this month's duty has been done. So long for now.

P.S. Many thanks for the big Class effort during the Development Program Campaign. Each contribution helped in putting the drive over the top. A special thank-you to Swifty and the unsung class agents who had the sometimes-difficult task of soliciting us and did it conscientiously and successfully.
