Let's All Strive in '55

As you have undoubtedly realized by this time there was no class column in the February issue and consequently I offer a word of explanation. To be frank with you the lack of the column is a result of too much work and too little time. The fiscal year of our business coincides with the calendar year, and consequently there is a terrific inventory problem at the end of each year. I got to the point in the month of January where it was too late to send the column in. I sincerely regret this but honestly it was beyond my control.

For once, since I started writing the class notes, I have a considerable amount of material from which to draw. Consequently the news from the various members is as follows:

"Good old reliable Bob Craig sent me a letter that he had received from John Milburn in San Francisco. John states that he began a continuation of his training at Stanford in July '54 and will stay on until July '56. He is specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. Upon completion of his residency he would like to remain in San Francisco and the Bay Area which he says he has grown very fond of. For those who might be interested, John's address is Stanford University Hospitals, Clay and Webster Streets, San Francisco 15, Calif.

From down Pennsylvania way comes a letter from Burrows Barstow, who advises that he was really disappointed that he couldn't make the 10th reunion, but it was impossible due to the fact that they were moving to Philadelphia and into a new home the week of reunion. Burrows is with the Ohio Boxboard Company, handling sales in Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. He has been with the company for two years and in Philadelphia a year and a half. Burrows advises that he is alone in the territory and has a small sales office just a mile from home, lucky fellow, and that they live fifteen miles outside of Philadelphia. He sees Dave Schirmer fairly frequently, since he has been with the same company for some time and is in the New York sales office. The Barstows now have two children, a girl three and a boy four months. Burrows states that they get back to Cleveland about once a month for a couple of days and he usually manages to see Jane and DickKimmel. Dick is with the American Steel and Wire being staff assistant to the president.

A short time ago I received a very nice note from Bud Silverstein and he advises that he has stuck his neck out 50,000 miles this year, claiming that the Class of '43 was going to win its first Green Derby. He advises we're up against some really tough competition but with lots of participation and a few big gifts we can make it. Bud is now in the process of lining up some new agents for this year - why not let's have same volunteers so that we can push ourselves into first place? Bud writes that there are quite a few '43s around his vicinity, and from time to time he sees Rocky Rockwell,Kev Kenny, John Pritchard and Bill Whitemarsh.

From up in Vermont way comes word from Kelly Coffin of an addition to the family on January 3. The new arrival's name is David Rush Coffin. Kelly advises that his wife Janey is now completely surrounded with males inasmuch as they also have two large dogs of the same sex. During a recent visit to Hanover in January, Kelly had a visit with Jim Cruickshank who was travelling the northern part of his territory for a textile publication. Kelly advises that Jim looked real healthy and seemed very pleased with his job. Quite frequently Kelly exchanges visits with RayColby who is still promoting the "finest dictating equipment in the world." I have been advised that Ray's line of chatter when he installs the device is something to behold. Knowing Ray as I did I could sit here and have a good laugh visualizing the line that was being handed out. I would give anything in the world to overhear a conversation and sales pitch by Ray trying to sell dictating equipment to his old pal Fletcher. Ray and his wife, Judy, live in Montpelier with their three children, and the grapevine has it that there will be a fourth in the spring.

For those of you who might have overlooked it, there was an excellent article in a recent issue by Roy Wolbarst which was in tribute to Tuss McLaughry.

The other day I received a nice letter from "Pres" Brooks who now resides in Toledo Ohio. The purpose of the letter was to announce the arrival of a future Dartmouth Indian, who arrived on October 17, 1954. Pres reports that he has run into Charlie Schwartzbaugh and Bodie Mosenthal who headquarters in Cleveland.

Another future Dartmouth Indian has been reported by Walt Howe. The newest addition is a third boy and the fourth child. Bruce, as he is known, was born July 19 in Luxemburg. Walt has resigned from the Foreign Service, after long consideration, to pursue graduate study toward a Ph.D. He has been admitted for the next term to study under the special African Research and Study Program at Boston University.

From down New York way comes a card from Sandy and Don Kingsley stating that they are now buying a house at Yorktown Heights and expect to be in by March. Also Don is now working in White Plains, N. Y., for General Foods as editor of the General Foods News. The Christmas card that I received from Sandy and Don was a picture of their three children, namely Scott, Beth Ann and Chris. According to the file card on Don, Beth Ann does not exist, and I would appreciate being sent the date of birth so I can have the records up-to-date.

From scattered clippings and news sources around the globe come the following bits of information:

Norman Johnson who now resides at 57 Barrington Road, Bronxville, N. Y., has been promoted to major in the 106th Bombardment Wing of the N. Y. Air National Guard at Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Field. Norm served in World War II and during the Korean emergency and is wing intelligence officer. He is with the public information bureau of Con Edison in New York City and was formerly editorial executive of a California daily newspaper.

Word comes that Clarke Lyon will teach Bills and Notes and Constitutional Law at Western New England College, Springfield, Mass. Clarke spent two years in the USAF and then received his Bachelor of Law degree at Harvard University in 1948. Recently BradleyMorse who is now a chaplain of Westover Air Force Base spoke before the Woman's Club on the topic, "This Is Not a Child's World." Prior to entering the service he was associated with the Connecticut Conference of Congregational Churches. Bradley served in World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres and reentered the service during the Korean conflict. He is married and has four children. Bradley, would you please send me their names and dates of birth, because your record card only lists one child?

Roy Watson has recently been elected president and general manager of the Kahler Corp. in Rochester, Minn. Recently he was also elected president of the Minnesota State Hotel Association during its state convention in Rochester.

That about winds up the chatter for this month, but don't forget, "Let's All Strive in '55." First place in the Green Derby is our goal.
