Prof. Herbert West visited Portland, Ore., on March 4 and addressed a dinner meeting of alumni and wives at the University Club. There were about thirty in attendance, including Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Evans, whose son Gordon is a student at Dartmouth. Dr. andMrs. Charles Mills '34 were here from Salem, Ore., and were the only out-of-Portland members present.
Herbert West told us about the wonderful Library and its books, which have been one of his special interests over the years, and brought us up to date on happenings at Hanover, both athletically and scholastically. We were very reluctant to have him close his address and subsequent remarks and would have kept him longer, but he had ideas of going to Salem that evening with Charlie Mills, and it was 10:30 p.m. by then anyhow.
Our enrollment committee headed by EricHaessler '42 is very active, and although the quantity of applicants is not greater than previous years, the quality is much improved, so that chances of acceptance by the College are much enhanced. Portland committee members are Fred Greenwood, Tuck School '10, John Storrs '42, John Hemingway '45, JohnButtler '45. Also Dr. Charles Mills '34 and Dr. Donald Bauer of Coos Bay.
The committee expects soon to add new members from Eugene, Klamath Falls, and eastern Oregon cities.
