This is the beginning. It is the manifold beginning of one of '52's best years. First and foremost DON'T FORGET JUNE. In case you haven't heard, that month is important because on the weekend after graduation "We're Up for '52's 5th!!" Plan on it NOW. The exact dates will have to await the publication of the College calendar for '56-'57, but we will keep you posted on the plans as they develop. With respect to the reunion itself, Bob "Bins" Binswanger is overseeing the various problems that go with his job as reunion chairman. If you have any thoughts on the reunion itself he is the man to contact. You may communicate with him through the address at the head of the column and I will see that mail is forwarded to him.
Secondly, at the Yale game on November 3 in New Haven, '52s will be gathering before the game. The exact location will be published via The Crier sometime before the game. In view of the fact that the Bowl isn't usually filled to capacity the suggestion has been made that we get general admission seats. That will enable us to be seated in one block. Those tickets can be obtained at the game for those who would like them. A similar gathering is tentatively planned for the Harvard game in Cambridge the week before the Yale game. Plan to make one of them if you can.
As the months go on you will be hearing more about reunion plans via this media, separate mailings, and The Crier. There is a new slate of Class Officers to be selected and other items of interest about which you may want to express an opinion. We would like to hear from any or all of you on these matters.
Enough of such for the moment. With the summer now well behind us there's quite a bit of news, so on with ...
What's New With '52
Picking up some of the items at random, I note that Charlie Curtis has been named district manager of the Wilmington, Delaware office of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company. He has been with that Company since 1954 working at the Philadelphia branch office. He has earned himself a membership to the Vice President's Club; an honor group for those agents who achieve outstanding records in sales and service during their first year with the Company. Charlie and his wife Alison make their home in Elkins Park, Pa.
Going back to last spring, graduations of various sorts saw a number of '52s distinguish themselves. At Newport, Jim Wright graduated as honor man from the Navy's Officer Candidate School. His outstanding record placed him first in a class of 387 other graduates. At last contact, he was scheduled to be stationed in Washington. Jim is also a graduate of Harvard Law School, having received his degree with distinction. He is a member of the New York State Bar, admitted in 1955. Rog Phillips also graduated from OCS last spring. He has a Harvard Law degree to his credit and should by now have finished an additional course at the Naval Justice School in Newport. At last report he was scheduled to report to the Carrier Leyte where he will serve as legal officer. Rog is on leave of absence from the firm of Fish, Richardson and Neave while finishing out his tour for Uncle Sam.
On June 10, Tufts University bestowed advance degrees on three '52s who have com- pleted graduate work there: Jules Baum, Bill Rilling, and Ed Smuckler all received the degree of Doctor of Medicine.
Who's New With 'gas
I have a feeling that this section of the column is far from complete, although I have certainly had an abundance of announcements over the past few years. If by any chance you have not brought the files up to date with regard to offspring, I would welcome any corrections or additions. By the way, I am sure that some are wondering what the situation is in regard to the matter of the Class Baby. The Class Baby's name will be announced at reunion time and to qualify, the parents must have been married on the day of graduation or after. The first birth to '52 parents who so qualify will be appropriately honored next June.
The latest additions to the growing clan of '52 juniors include a third daughter born to Necy and Phil Benton. Cynthia-Jean was born on May 19 and the Bentons allow as how they are already in the market for Dartmouth sons-in-law. Phil and his wife are currently living in Birmingham, Mich. ROY Twining Abbot III was born on May 16. Whether or not the Abbots are looking for Dartmouth daughters-in-law, I haven't heard. And from across the waters comes the following: "Le Lieutenant et Madame Joseph M. Ware sont heureux de vous announcer la naissance de leur fille Sarah Lee, 15 Fevrier 1956, Etain Air Base, France." C'est tout pour la momente.
As is usually the case over the summer months, I get a little behind on the subject of who hitched with who and when. As a result there will be a few engagements an nounced herein that may have culminated in marriage. Chronologically, however, here is the way my files read.
George Davis and Maria Nekos announced marriage intentions last spring. If my records are correct they were married on June 30. George's bride is a graduate of Cornell where she studied industrial and labor relations and received a Master's degree. As of last spring, she was associated with Fortune magazine. George is a graduate of Tuck School and is working with Arthur Anderson & Co. Late last May, Mr. and Mrs. Willis H. Hyde of Cincinnati, announced the engagement of their daughter, Judith Lynn to John North. Judy is a graduate of Wellesley College and Johnny, after graduating from Tuck, served two years in the Navy as a lieutenant (jg). Avis Ann Cox and Rev. Fran Frellick an nounced their engagement last June 5. Fran's bride-to-be is a graduate of Gulf Park Junior College, Gulfport, Miss., and received her A.B. from the University of Oklahoma in 1954. She was awarded a Danforth Foundation Fellowship for work with student religious groups at the University of New Hampshire last year and has been studying at Union Theological Seminary in New York City where she expects to receive her Master's degree in religious education next spring. Fran received his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Andover Newton Theological School in May 1955 and recently received his Master's degree in Sacred Theology from the same institution. Last June, Phoebe Ann Evans and Charles Dey announced marriage intentions. Phoebe is a recent Skidmore graduate and Doc was scheduled for summer school at Columbia for graduate work. He has accepted an appointment as a teaching fellow at Phillips Andover for the fall term. Doc now has three years of Navy duty behind him and he and his bride-to-be were planning a winter wedding according to the latest word I have.
Under the general heading of matrimony there are a number of weddings to report, but time and space limit me to just a few [his month. Early in June at a ceremony in Dwight Hall Chapel at Yale University, Judith Ann Alexander became the bride of Walt Schalick. Judy received her B.A. degree from Wellesley in 1955 and her M.A. from Yale this past spring. Walt received his LL.B. from Harvard in 1955 and his LL.M. from Columbia School of Law this year. He is a member of the Bar and will practice with Cadwallader, Wickersham and Taft and they will make their home in New York. On June 16 at least two members of the Class took the big step. Bill Biddle and Barbara Ruth Noyes were married at the St. Denis Church in Hanover. Barbara attended the University of Michigan and Bill, having seen two years of duty with the Army in Korea, has been attending the Harvard Graduate School of Education. They will make their home in Dedham, Mass. On that same day in Briarcliff Manor, New York, George von Peterffy and Alexandra Phillips exchanged vows at the All Saints Church. Mrs. von P. graduated from Vassar and received her Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. George is currently attending the Harvard Business School.
On June 23, Gil Noble and Barbara Ann Raab were married in Glen Ridge, N. J. Barbara was graduated from the University of Vermont and this fall both she and Gil will be teaching at the Randolph (Vt.) High School.
So be it for this first sitting of the season. We'll be looking for you at the games this fall, and before you forget it, make a note of the fact that reunion comes up this next spring. See you here next month.
