First, a report from correspondent DouglasLey on the activities of '35ers in the Bostonarea:

Harry Reynolds went into politics in a big way this summer. He started running for Governor's Council, which is a nine-man elective body passing on the Governor's appointments, contracts, etc. He was doing fine until the Governor's son came back from Washington and announced that he'd like the job. Harry fought it out in the primary and made a good try, but the magic name of Chris Herter was too much. At one stage of the campaign Harry appeared in a helicopter hovering over the commuters along the B&M and haranguing like mad. Dick Muzzy, Bob McLellan and Bob Millane were all helping work on the campaign, which assumed something of a Dartmouth flavor. McLellan, by the way, was recently promoted to director of fiscal operations in charge of the Accounting and Auditing Department for the New England Mutual Insurance Company.

Lou and Mary Niles had a picnic across the road from Harvard Stadium before the game. The Leys and Cushmans horned in. Gloria Reynolds wandered by with the remains of a screwdriver but we never did see Harry.

The lawyers around town received an announcement of a Federal Tax session at which one of the participating experts was Dick Upton of Concord, N. H.

Last summer we had one of our irregular '35 cocktail parties, this time at Ed Dyer's in Waban. My memory for one reason or another seems to be slightly fuzzy on this matter at this stage, but I believe I saw Gow, Hopkins, Kurson, Muzzy,Nayor, McLellan, Reynolds, Rosen, Somers, Ferries,Stainsby, Wallace, Buxbaum, Parsons and Cushman.

No doubt there is more going on, but this is all I know about for now.

SOCIOLOGICAL & POLITICAL NOTES....

Two of our classmates, Paul Cummings and Dick Stern, were featured prominently in the press recently, as follows: Time Magazine in its October 22 issue noted:

Last week Mississippi invited 20 small-town New England editors and publishers to come down at the state's expense to learn the truth about what segregation is, and why....

Midway through the tour, Editor Paul Cummings Jr. of New Hampshire's Peterborough "Transcript" told a Southern colleague: "I wasn't sure what to believe before I made the trip. Now I find the worst is true. We don't condemn you for practicing segregation. What we can't understand is how a people can be denied the right to vote in the U.S. To me this is unbelievable. I just couldn't believe it until I came down here and heard it firsthand."...

As the end of the tour approached, a few of the New Englanders ... thought that "there will never be integration, Mississippi's way of life will remain as it is." But most of the editors felt that segregation was doomed even in Mississippi.... Said Editor Cummings: . "Equal justice must come. Our system makes no allowance for 47 states and Mississippi."

The New York Times (November 6) carriedthis item headed, "Fan Pays $1,280 To TalkFor Stevenson on TV":

"Dick Stern, Private Citizen," a one-man electronic soap box, made its debut over television station WABD from 12:35 to 1:35 o'clock this morning. It starred Dick Stern and was produced by Dick Stern. The sponsor was also Dick Stern.

S. Richard Stern, 43-year-old drug manufacturer of 1160 Fifth Avenue and self-described "ordinary guy" went to his bank yesterday morning, withdrew $1,280 and purchased the station's time to advocate the election of Adlai E. Stevenson.

Mr. Stern said he was a registered Republican but had changed his mind two years ago.

"I can't afford this program," he told his listeners. Then he said, "Money isn't everything."
