I should like to reflect for a moment on the month of October which, for the first time in several years, released the splendor that is Autumn in New Hampshire for all to see in an area far greater than usual. I suppose the practical question of what to do with every falling leaf assumed importance in inverse proportion to the grandeur of the colors. There have been many suggestions as to how to cope with the fallen leaf, ranging from the compost pile to the modern machine which sucks them up and practically digests the leaves. And somewhere along the line the rake is suggested. Since this involved work for me, it seemed imperative to find some method of leaf removal that was both thorough and effortless. By observing the desires and inclinations of the neighborhood children, I discovered that with moderate supervision and no physical effort, my offer-to provide a wooden match, brought a child with a rake from every direction with cries of "bonfire!" I don't recall having to rake a single leaf this fall and the yard has been almost immaculate!
Through the kind attention of G. R. Carpenter '10 of San Francisco, we have word of the contribution of Art Carpenter toward completion of a project near to the hearts of the local alumni. In part, Mr. Carpenter's letter reads:
Scheduled for the December issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE will be a (Club) story of unveiling of a plaque in remembrance of winsor D. Wilkinson '10 at the cabin of the Dartmouth Outing Club of Northern California near Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada Mts. You will see some mention of the interesting ceremony in the November issue, perhaps the wording of the plaque will be given in connection with the Class of 1910 notes. Wilkinson, outstanding in his loyalty to Dartmouth, for years was the dynamo in the erection of the Outing Club's cabin in the ski country.
Briefly, it was Art Carpenter who gave the plaque an artistic completeness by mounting it on a fine slab of California poplar white wood. Previously he had turned out a handsome gavel which was used by President Dickey and presented to him about a year ago when Outing Club members dedicated a great stone chimney to the memory of the late Ray Taylor '11, the first president of the Club.
Art conducts an interesting business under the title of Espenet Fine Woods in San Francisco. He has established himself as an authority on the use of a great variety of woods from all over the world. He specializes in the unusual and handsome cocktail tables and other pieces of furniture which are typical of California decor. Dartmouth Alumni of this sector have produced the required talent for a great variety of endeavors. Art has been the ace in the hole when the local alumni wished to devise a gift or memorial of unusual artistry.
There is little surprise and much pride in learning that Luis Zalamea was selected by the United Nations Secretariat to act as SecretaryGeneral of the Ninth Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations on United Nations Information in Latin America which was held from October 20 to 24 in Santiago, Chile. Luis, hailing from Bogota, Colombia, had joined the United Nations in 1948 as editor-translator. In 1951 he was appointed Latin American Liaison Officer in which capacity he made a six-month goodwill trip to all of the Americas. By 1954 he became Acting Director of the United Nations Information Center at Bogota and in January-1955 was promoted to his present post as Deputy Director, United Nations Informations Center for Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay with headquarters in Buenos Aires.
Also from overseas, Don Amy wrote in late September of finishing up his work in Spain (Don is a design engineer with Brown, Rayraond, mond, Walsh Concrete Pile Co.) and heading back home. While abroad, Don managed a vacation trip into France and Switzerland as well as having the opportunity to see quite a bit of Spain. He says there is a surprisingly large amount of that. Another European traveler, Dick Lee (England, France and Spain), was back in time to spend the summer on Nantucket, but by September the wanderlust took Dick, Barbara and their two oldest children, Susan and Peter, out on their yawl from Nantucket to Marblehead via Manhattan. Another sailor, Al Priddy, was one of the crew, along with his brother Stan '43 and Bus Mosbacher '43, on Bob Mosbacher's 5.5 meter Carina in the U. S. Olympic trials at Marion, Mass. in August. Al reports they did right well but that it will not be necessary for him to go to Australia. I can just imagine Al's relief!
Schenectady Alumni meet at their monthly luncheon fairly regularly: Ralph Farnum, a G.E. specialist of procedures, Bob Searles, with G.E. since last November in the field of Educational Grants, Don Kerr, a unit supervisor with (you guess) and Preston Reynolds, a very active and successfully prominent physician in private practice after having been with G.E. at the Knolls Atomic Plant.
Down in Poughkeepsie is a division of I.B.M. which recently acquired the talents of Tom Hunter. After two years of being his own boss in the home building business, Tom says it's much easier on the nerves to build with someone else's money and be on the payroll. At I.B.M. he is in the Facilities Planning Dept. where work is done on new plant location and facilities that are needed.
Despite the score, it was reported that the Harvard pre-game picnic, from the standpoint of the "tailgate" set, was a tremendous success. Among the stalwarts were Bud andPeg Forte as undercover agents in red coats and hats, Paul and Muriel Costello, Ralph andJerry Morrison with foot long sandwiches, Artand Pat Henderson plus a flashing green tie reminiscent of the tenth reunion, Ed Hawkridge, George and Louise Clark and Ad andKiki Winship with their two oldest children, Sally and Peter. Also from the Boston area, we received word that Paul (get out the vote) Vaitses was edged out in the September Republican Primary where he ran for State Replesentative. for the 22nd Middlesex District. After sixteen years of grassroots politics, including two terms as a Melrose Alderman, you can be well assured that Paul will be back in the running the next time.
Flash! Structural designer and engineer PaulBreck succumbed, as do most men, to the pretty smile of a winsome lass. Lois Soengen and Paul were married in Los Angeles, Calif, on November 24 and are now living in Waltham, Mass., having returned from a honeymoon in Bermuda.
Appearing in and around Hanover during the fall season were, to mention a few: Artand Joya Cox in from Washington, D. C.; Frank and Frances Garran up from Barnstable, Mass.; Ben Page watching the New Hampshire game and reflecting on the "vague 15th"; and Wendy and Betty Nauss leaving town just before Jim and Flo Lain arrived for the Holy Cross game. Ed and Helen Chalfant spent several days in the environs in September as the beginning of a year's leave of absence, on fellowship, from his assistant professorship of English at Hofstra College, Hempstead, Long Island. Ed will spend the year finishing his biography of Henry Adams, for which I understand a publisher is waiting.
In closing for this month, we wish to set your memory at ease, it was Sanborn and not Silsby Hall, as mentioned last month. And to jog your memory, the Class dues are now overdue so if the check fits, send it. And one more thing, this being the last for 1956, to each and every one of you, A MERRY CHRISTMAS and A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
