The notes have to be abbreviated this month to leave room for the record number of names we have for the '56 Alumni Fund campaign.

I think we'll have enough room to quote excerpts from a letter I received recently from the 01' Rebel, Bruce Thomson:

While I am writing, you might as well hear something from your Rebel about my fellow Confederates, for you apparently have poor reportorial service down our way. My contact with Dartmouth '44 is mainly with Dr. Earl Owen and your "charming" Hardy Caldwell.

Earl has been extremely busy as one of our foremost surgeons here in Lynchburg and already he has been made a partner in our best surgical firm. (Pardon the blowup, for Earl is my brother-in-law.) He has two bright bubbling little girls and his Betsy is expecting a boy in January. His and my family had an enjoyable vacation together this summer at Nags Head, N. C. Earl turned out to be quite a crab eater.

Occasionally on my travels to Chattanooga I see Hardwick and his family ... and if you think he is charming, you should meet his wife and brood. As a big stove manufacturing executive, he moves around the country quite a bit these days.

As for me, I'm having a lot of fun being the daddy of a couple of boys and the husband of Earl's kid sister. I am employed by Continental Can Company Inc. as Special Sales Representative for sales of crowns to Coca-Cola bottlers, am president of several Coca-Cola bottling companies, a Bank Director, and yard bird.

There's a boy who operates like Jim Fiske! No completely hardened mogul he - adds in a P.S., "I'm plugging for Randolph Macon Woman's College these days, being on the Advisory Board (Ed. note: he still sounds like Fiske) so tell the boys to send their daughters to RMWC."
