John S. Fletcher Sr., practicing attorney in Chattanooga, Tenn., for the past fifty years, a member of the only Constitutional Convention Tennessee has had since 1870, a prominent educational, church and civic leader, was recently the recipient of the coveted Kiwanis Service Award given once a year to one of the outstanding citizens in the city in recognition of his generous and effective support of virtually all worth-while organizations and movements for the betterment of Chattanooga. John is a member of the American, Tennessee and Chattanooga bar associations, attorney for the Manufacturers Association of the city, a past president of Kiwanis Club, trustee of the University of Chattanooga, and for years he served on the General Board of Education of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a body responsible for the founding of numerous colleges and universities. John and Mrs. Fletcher love to travel - they have just returned from their seventh visit to Mexico. A southern glow warms the hearts of all classmates as they learn of the contribution which John has made and is making for his community and state. Congratulations to him upon this latest honor conferred upon him.
A recent letter received from Matt Bullock from Curacao, Dutch West Indies, states that he spent the last three months in Spain and Portugal on legal matters for the Bahai faith. He confirms what most travelers discover in those countries, that the cost of living is the lowest to be found in Europe. From January to May, he will be in the West Indies on a similar mission, but hopes to return to Hanover to be with us in June.
At hand from the Hooker Electrochemical Company of Niagara Falls, N.Y., is a book published by the company in commemoration of its fiftieth anniversary. The book is entitled Salt if Water, Power if People. Among the fir.st to join the staff of this very successful and ably managed company was our own Ned Bartlett, who was hired as a timekeeper and general clerk in 1907. Bartlett, a New England Yankee, whose father was head of the Chemistry Department at Dartmouth College and whose grandfather had been president of Dartmouth, was destined to have an immense impact upon the Hooker Company. Much of the company's striking growth in recent years is the result of Ned's dynamic leadership and the training he has given the company's executive staff. Elected president in 1945 and chairman of the board from 1951 to 1955, Ned today, as chairman of the Finance Committee, continues as a top adviser to the company. A salute to Ned and the Bartlett family.

Your secretary regrets to record the death of our classmate, M. Everett Mathes, who passed away January 18 at his home, Little-worth Road, Dover, N.H.A letter from his son, Roger (Dartmouth '50) brought the sad news. "Johnny" - to us - came from a great Dartmouth family; his two brothers and his brother-in-law Dike Varney '02 and his son Roger were all graduates of Dartmouth. In another section of the MAGAZINE will be found an In Memoriam to our loved and respected classmate. Letters of sympathy and respect have been sent to the family on behalf of the Class by your Secretary.
Some of the Clan of 1904 have started south - others will follow later. Ike Maynard, up in Maine, says "Why go South - when you can sit around in your shirtsleeves while Floridians are clad in overcoats and mittens?"
Keep in mind 1904 has a reunion at Hanover in June. The dates and reservations will be announced in the April issue of the MAGAZINE. Cheerio to all.
