Apparently there are quite a few of you who can answer affirmatively my recent query regarding skiing. In view of the fact that it has been the best in years around these parts, a large group of '52s have been seen by your correspondent on the various slopes. To name them all would be repetitious but to those of you who may not have had a chance to hit some of the eastern ski areas in recent years, you might be interested to know that at Cannon, for example, you can take a T-bar all the way to the summit and that there are many new trails which go a long way towards alleviating the crowded conditions such as we had three years ago. Big Bromley, being the nearest area of any size to New York, makes for excellent skiing, combined with an ability to handle tremendous crowds which incidentally prevail wherever one goes these days. And Stowe has opened a whole new mountain - Spruce Peak - with new tows and many more slopes; And so it goes . . . so any of you who used to, but haven't been able to recently, ski, that is, in this area can count on larger crowds but much better facilities.

Our spies have revealed that Hanover has seen its share of '52s in recent weeks, including Julie Robinson and his wife, Jim Fowler,Steve Mandel, and Mr. and Mrs. Al Gschwind. I find that last month, in listing several notes of academic interest, I neglected to note that Weyman Lundquist was the recipient of a scholarship at the Harvard Law School for the second time. He graduated cum laude from Dartmouth and is a member of the Chancery Club at the Law School. Along the same lines Bennett Stein has been elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Society which is incidentally a non-secret medical honor society. Another cum laude member of our class, he is finishing his last year at McGill, after which he will report for duty with the USN as an ensign, since he holds an unused reserve commission.

In the letter department the first two notes of interest concern recent additions to the growing '52 family. The first comes from Mrs.Peter Stanley in Providence, R. I. The Stanleys now number four; the most recent addition being Mark Perry. He was born last July 28. Mark has a brother David who will be 3 years old come April. Pete is at present traffic manager for the New England Telephone Company in that city. The other addition to the '52s is Andrew Scott Holmes, born January 10, and also the second member of that family. Congratulations are definitely in order to Bobby and Lois Holmes and Pete andJean Stanley.

In the sports vein, on the 19th of January, the U. S. American Hockey Association's AllStars took on the Worcester Warriors and came out on the better side of 4-1. JohnnyGrocott playing for the All-Stars proved that he has not forgotten the game even though he managed to .spend six minutes of the game in the penalty box. I might add that the league in these parts plays a pretty high class brand of hockey and that the rosters show a goodly number of contemporaries.

Bill McAndrew, in his last year of medical studies at Harvard, informs me that his projected trip to India this winter fell through for reasons beyond his control. But let this note serve notice to those of you who he had planned to meet along the way that he won't be able to keep the appointments.

From a reporter on the Navy Pier that juts out into Lake Michigan comes word that a most successful meeting was had in the Chicago area recently, where a large group met and listened to Bob Blackman, the new football coach. Apparently the affair went rather well, much to the pleasure of these assembled. It seems that Johnny Brower and Kent Calhoun have been very active in Dartmouth affairs in that section of late. Also Herb Drury is not completely lost in the academic pursuit of a Master's in geography at the University of Michigan. He finds time to try such hills as Iron Mountain and the jump at Gary, Ill. Al Davis says he thinks he'll last until this spring, when he sheds the uniform for more comfortable attire. And from one of the most energetic strongholds of the contingent comes word from Stan Smiley that life could be much worse in Port Lyautey. To augment a letter from Bob Jelly, Stan writes that Bob is Assistant Design Officer there and that recently he (Bob) could be found hitting .some of the more colorful ski areas of Europe during a leave. Stan confirms the fact that he is unofficially assisting the officer-in-charge-of- physical-improvement-of-personnel-stationed- at-that-Naval-activity-for-the-betterment-of sloppy-shapes-and-soft-muscles. Stan says that he would like to hear from one Sam Daniell and all the other members of the '52 Track Team who will take the time to drop him a line at the U. S. Naval Air Facility, Box 8, Navy 214, c/o FPO, NYC.

In the business world, Dick Bressler can be located in Schenectady, N. Y., as a business trainee for General Electric. Those of you who live in the area centered by Jamestown, N. Y., and listen to the radio, specifically to WJOC, undoubtedly have heard the familiar voice of one Dave Dugan.

Just covering life in general, Charlie Clough is presently assigned to the USS Mindoro CVE 120. Deke Dorey is back in Marblehead after a tour of duty in the Far East. And according to information I have, John Lloyd is back in Ventnor, N. J., after a tour in Bangkok with the State Department.

THE MATRIMONIAL PICTURE. . . . The Christmas season brought on a new flurry of engagements and marriages. For example, Walt Grevatt and Margaret Vieth announced intentions last December 31. Margaret is a graduate of Oberlin College and presently is working at the Chicago University Lying-in Hospital. Walt is a student at the Chicago Theological Seminary. In New York, EdGreenberger and Joan Bloom announced their engagement on the same day. Joan is a Smith Graduate and received her Master's degree at Queens College. Ed is presently in the Army. Out on Long Island on January 14, Dave Drexler and Judith Segal announced plans for a summer wedding. Judy is a graduate of Mount Holyoke, Class of '52. Dave is attending Yale Law School where he belongs to Corbey Court and is a member of the staff of the Yale Law Journal. And recently BobMeanix and Florence Ann Emery made known their plans for a February wedding. Florence Ann graduated in 1953 from Emmanuel College. Bob has just completed his tour with the Navy.

As for the weddings, George Storck and Patricia Storch (maiden name) exchanged vows on December 4 at the Cadet Chapel at Weset Point. Pat attended St. Lawrence and George is a lieutenant in the U. S. Army, having attended Dartmouth with our class before transferring to West Point. Les Commons and Betsy McKay were married last December 18 in the Conner Memorial Chapel at Lycoming College in Pennsylvania. Betsy is a graduate of the University of Penn and Les is studying at the School of Dentistry there. Just before Christmas Jay Anderson and Edythe Scales were married in Endicott, N. Y. Jay's wife is a graduate of Syracuse University and received her Master's from Wellesley. John McNary served as best man. Jay served with the Army Ordnance Corps and is presently studying at the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance. And on Christmas Day Sheila Marshall and Dana Empringham were married at the Saugatuck Congregational Church in Connecticut. Dana left the class in 1950 and is associated with the Wolverine Supply & Mfg. Co. in New York.

That almost winds it up for this month except for one unfortunate item. Pete Lebovitz passed away on January 2. He was serving in the Naval Reserve (S. C.) and had been on active duty when he was confined to the U. S. Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Md. It was at this hospital that he succumbed.

Here's hoping that the cold war doesn't get any hotter. I for one have my uniform well stashed away and am sure it would be too difficult to find - I hope!
