Meditation on an effective life: A.B. Dartmouth, M.A. Reed, Ph.D. Columbia, honorary degrees from ten other universities/colleges. F our years in the navy, president of Allegheny College at 35; subsequently, of Colorado College, Claremont Graduate School and University Center, and State University of New York, Albany. Then he relaxed as research professor of human development at State University of New York, Stony Brook. Psychologist. Retired at 70. Lou Benezet writes of his journey: "Who knows what this proves? Could be I never learned any other line of work. Moral? I should have stayed in small liberal colleges. College president is a generic term for administrator of a higher learning center. University presidents are expected to be larger than life. They accept credit for the schools successes and, if they choose, delegate others to accept the failures. If they don't, a president's tenure is usually brief. College presidents, on the other hand, tend to be people-oriented persons who learn to refer success more often to 'we' than 'I' When things go wrong, they accept the blame; then they dig into what went wrong and try to fix it. The stress of facing others with nasty decisions has ways of wearing down 'people who can't duck them.'"
Dede Foster forwarded for us all Evie Young's joyful spirit-lifting note: "I am thrilled that these three generations are Dartmouth family, my family: husband Chet Young '36, son Geoffrey '69, and granddaughter Katy Young '00."
