Mathes Memorial Fund

When James M. Mathes '11 died on April 28 of this year the obituary notice stated that contributions to a Mathes Memorial Fund might be sent to Dartmouth College. As a result, over 200 gifts totaling $10,909 have been made to date.

Mr. and Mrs. Mathes had established a memorial fund for their son, James M. Mathes Jr. '39, who was killed in action in 1944 as a Navy lieutenant. At the time of Mr. Mathes' death this fund stood at $20,000.

In accordance with the wish of Mrs. Mathes, the two memorial funds have been combined. The 1956-57 report of the Treasurer of the College lists under Scholarship Funds the James M. Mathes Sr. 1911 and James M. Mathes Jr. 1939 Memorial Fund. On August 26 the fund stood at $30,909.
