Coach Tom Dent, observing his 35th year as Dartmouth soccer coach, must think that lady luck has turned the other shoulder. The Big Green in four outings has yet to come up with a win, losing in the opener to the University of Connecticut 4-3, tying Penn 2-2, losing to Brown 2-1, and most recently to Princeton 5-1.
With only two seniors- captain Tony Gittes, a fullback, and halfback John Trimble — plus a handful of lettermen, this is definitely a rebuilding year for the Big Green.
However, injuries, bad breaks and penalty kicks have really hurt this fall. In the game against Connecticut Dartmouth outscored the UConns 3-2, but Connecticut made two penalty kicks good and won 4-3. Playing against Penn, Dartmouth led 2-1 with just thirty seconds remaining. Then Penn got a penalty kick which they made good, and the game went into double-overtime without further scoring.
In an evenly played game with Brown, neither team scored until the third period and the first Bruin tally came when a Dartmouth defenseman accidentally tapped it into the Dartmouth goal in a scramble in front of the net.
Against Princeton, the Big Green was clearly outclassed, with center halfback Mitch Engle scoring the lone Indian tally in the second period. Princeton scored three goals later in the second period, and added two others in the second half to virtually knock Dartmouth out of Ivy League contention this fall.
Injuries have also hurt. Goalie Randy Malin was out of the Connecticut game, Captain Tony Gittes and Rolf von Eckartsberg, a standout German exchange student who plays at fullback, both missed most of the Penn game and the Brown contest. Fullback Jack Zipes, Art Quirk and Norm Blair filled in nicely.
