From the death of Bob Archibald in the Naval Hospital, to the assassination of AlBlake in Malaya by "insurgents," to the publication of Dave Bradley's "No Place to Hide," there may run some thread of continuity. Perhaps some member of the class with more of an historical perspective than I, can draw these events together.

The wire from Johnny Merrill '37 announcing Archibald's death and the articles on the front pages of newspapers here of the violent demise of Blake came so close together that it added greatly to the shock so usual in the loss of classmates and friends. Fortunately we, are not of an age when events of this sort occur with distressing regularity, and so the loss is felt more keenly. For details about Al Blake, see the Necrology section; Bob Reno is writing a notice on Bob Archibald, but whether it makes this issue or not is not sure.

This month's lion's share of news stories goes to 1938's foremost author, Dave Bradley. I don't have to expand on the fact that his book has received "rave" reviews everywhere in the press, on the radio, and probably too on the screen. It is so highly esteemed that even I shall try to find time to read it along with the inevitable "daily quizzes" of hopeful if ignorant urchins who think that "Suffragettes were women who wanted to."

In spite of touring the great United States, including Dayton, Ohio, Louisville, Ky. and Marblehead, Mass., plus a very short flying visit to Hanover, I was not fortunate enough to encounter many '38's; I even missed former Colonel Vic Johnson while I toured the higher strata of Louisville society. The rising young executive of the General Plywood Company was not in evidence at the Country Club or the Pendennis Club at the hours I attended soirees there; perhaps he works. At any rate I received favorable comments as to his abilities and morals, something I wish I could say for all members of the class, and particularly those in Needham, Mass.

Admittedly I am prejudiced in favor of the educational field and take every opportunity to reward those of the class by publicity who are so poorly rewarded in salary scales, if my own case is any indication. Hal Berman continues to draw favorable comment in his new job as Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School. Professor Berman is convinced that an important aspect of preserving such shaky peace as now exists between the Western World and the Soviet Union is the constant interflow of information between the two opposing civilizations. He is discouraged at the lack of knowledge now existing of Soviet legal institutions and principles and feels that the tvpe of course he is now giving is necessary not only for the important end of understanding but more practically since those who have now or will have business relations with Soviet Russia need a knowledge of the rules under which they will operate. He is encouraged at the increasing flow of legal treatises and case reports coming in from the U.S.S.R.

Again in the Squayah, as some Boston columnists put it, Roland Moody is now in charge of the Circulation Department in the Library system of that well-known institution on the banks of the verdant Charles. After Dartmouth, Roland went to Columbia, where he received the degree of Bachelor of Library Service in 1941.

Still in the educational branch of life, and an important phase of it to Dartmouth, is a list the College has sent me of members of the class engaged in interviewing prospective members of the freshman class and finding out "why they want to go to Dartmouth" and what chance they have of scoring six or seven touchdowns against Yale. Frank Frey, 1938'$ most prominent figure in alumni circles, is Alumni Councillor for the entire region of Wisconsin. Others who are chairmen of interviewing committees include: Philip H. Jacob,James B. (for "Boit", not a corruption of "Bert") Wiswall, Thomas A. Boyan (the great unknown—he's owed me several letters since Pearl Harbor Day), Walt Averill, Joseph P.Fogarly, and James Evans Cooney (formerly of the law firm of Cooney, Reilly, and Fasolo, two of whom have developed into fine lawyers).

Samuel J. Caldwell has been elected president of the Dartmouth Club of Central Ohio (home town Columbus) for the current year. Someday I am going to make the threatened survey of civic service by 1938 which I indicated in the first issue this fall.

Last news item of the month, and a sparse month it has been at that, is that Bill Schopflin is now with the Spencer Chemical Co. of Kansas City, Mo. as Sales Supervisor.

Speaking of the paucity of news, why not drop a slight postcard in the mail telling of some classmate's nefarious conduct New Year's Eve or any Saturday night? I have spared my friends recently because I don't want you to tire of them before I have some really libelous material, but there's no reason your friends should be so neglected. You might even let me know what you are doing or thinking.
