We heard of Dana Parkinson's retirement some time ago but apparently he can't sit still. Now he has a position on the staff of the Willard Hotel in Washington and his wife is on the staff of the Red Cross. Then, too, this fall he was made Honorary Chair- man of a big celebration of Rock Creek Park Day - a real big time. Rock Creek Park is a 2,900-acre recreation park in the very heart of Washington. The Chairman of the Honorary Commission for observance of the occasion was none other than Mamie Eisenhower who served at Dana's request. Between Art Soule and Dana, it looks like 'OB is doing pretty well in presidential circles.
Had a good letter from Stan Tappan in which he mentions several of the class as follows, "I was disappointed not to have seen the Harvard game. Also hoped we could have another 'OB reunion back of the stadium as we did two years ago. Had a nice letter from Priscilla Evans. She says that Webb is fine. He bowls on the green most every day. She says they are thinking about going to Florida this winter. A note from Wink Fiske in Pittsburgh says that he wants to get rid of his place there and settle in Falmouth on the Cape. I had a nice call on Serena Rotch and she seems fine."
You will be glad to know that Art Lewis has been out of the hospital for some time and is now back at his desk pounding away as usual - well almost, anyway.
Pauline O'Shea is in the news. Marjorie Mills is the culinary expert for the Boston Herald and runs a column as to "how to do it." She is quite a person if you like your food. Anyway in one of her columns appears the following:
Pauline O'Shea writes us from Laconia that her daughter-in-law used the foil wrapped method for cooking the Thanksgiving turkey and reported a MARvelous bird - and so easy. Instructions free from Pauline, I should say.
The clipping mentioned above was sent us from Henry Stone. Apparently his wife Blanche is also a devotee of Marjorie Mills as she noted it in the Herald. In his letter Henry tells that he was in the hospital for three weeks recently and under traction for 24 hours a day. He's over that trouble but admits that he is not feeling as well as he would like. But he is taking it courageously, just as you would expect he would. He has been through a lot but still counts his blessings.
The Christian Science Monitor recently invited Richard Treadway to describe the interesting Treadway chain of hotels. They ran three full articles of about a third of a page each and make very interesting reading. In the first article a large picture is shown of Papa Treadway and the three sons. Tread sure looks happy. Speaking of Tread, reminds me that I failed to mention the new swimming pool at his Royal Park Inn at Vero Beach. Surely that should have been listed among the many attractions. How about it? Going down?
There's good news about Mort Hull who has been under the weather for some months. He has made a good recovery and is now back home enjoying things in his usual way.
A note from Chick Currier states that he is having some interesting responses in answer to his recent questionnaire about gifts and estate planning for the College. We'll have more on that later but in the meantime let's give the matter serious thought. As a class, 'OB has not yet approached its potential, although there have been some generous individual gifts and future arrangements for Dartmouth.
The College advises of the death of William L. Lee of our class. He died in Cleveland, September 26, 1956. Since graduation nothing has been heard from him. Accordingly there is nothing that can be added.
