Brethren, prepare. This semester begins '08's semi-centennial, the year of the great trek and the great reunion, when we enact the role of the class we wondered at in 1908. Lets start making plans now to gather in Hanover next June. Preparations are brewing. Class book is under construction and awaits your story if you haven't sent it in. Mike Stearns has been elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Dartmouth General Ass'n of Alumni at its 103 rd annual meeting. As such and as our President, he is the Major Domo and Chief of Staff. The worries and the credit are his'n. Let's help him. So much for the prologue. Now to business.
08 is entitled to a cheer for its part in the '937 Alumni Fund Drive. We done fine, finishing second only to '07 in our group. '07 was a shoo in as the 50 year class which always busts a gut to be first, as we will have to do this year. We raised $7705.23 for 119% of our quota and the largest amount we have raised in recent years at least. Let everybodv thank everybody else for his part in this record.
Syd Ruggles has retired and moved to New Hampshire where his address is R.F.D. 1, Laconia. After many strenuous years as engineer in the U, S. Air Force, Syd leaves government service with a well-earned letter of commendation from Maj. Gen. Underbill as Eastern Air Force Commander. He is now sacrificing much time in the interest of our class as Biographer, compiling our 1958 Class Book. It s a big job in which he needs our cooperation. He states that time will not permit acknowledgment of all letters but that they will have full attention. Any fill-ins that he is obliged to make for lack of information will be submitted for approval. Don't make him do it alone. Send him what you want said, if you haven't yet done so.
Of course you saw in the papers that Rosie - sometimes called John Hinman - was given an honorary degree by the College, last June. Every member of the class is happy and proud at this well-earned recognition. Some men make big records, some are big in themselves. A tip of the hat to Rosie for both.
Joe Blakely retires. A long article with picture in the Montpelier Argus of Aug. 15 does Joe honor as he sold his prominent pharmacy after 47 years of service in it. As such, he was the dean of pharmacists in Montpelier. He is now going to relax a bit, his remaining job being the senior member of the board of the Capitol Savings Bank and Trust Company of that city.
Dr. Wink Fiske is now located at North Falmouth, Mass., having sold his home in Pittsburgh and retired as previously indicated.
You might be interested in knowing the names of those who gathered in Hanover last June at our informal reunion where a good time was had by all and where the ills of the world got proper attention. Those present with wives Were Hinman, Walker, Bartlett, Munkelt, Blakely, Symmes and Amidon. Those who walked alone were Treadway, Thwing, Bob Thompson, Phil Thompson, Knox, Harriman, Stearns, Rogers, Lamphear, and Squier.
We have a new golf champion in Chick Currier who has been burning up the fairways out his way but we'll hold that until next time as we have been requested not to bubble over in this issue.
