The spirit of Carnival undoubtedly lingers yet on the Hanover scene, and in a vein apropos of the season, Randy Hayes writes from the Armed Forces Staff College at Norfolk where he is sort of a perpetual social chairman for a perpetual carnival. Randy's the Club Officer there, and in rather a unique position since the College personnel are all senior type officers he's the only Ensign on the base, and according to him, there are no Lt. (jg's), or Lt.'s, and a "few" Lt. Commanders.

One of the club's functions is to sponsor ships' parties, and more than once in the last few months the U.S.S. lowa has been royally entertained. Bags Bagdasarian keeps Dartmouth well represented on such occasions.

"Bags' " present position aboard the "Big I" is unknown, but Randy claims he "runs the ship" and has acquired the nickname "Deals" over the past few months, so apparently every-thing's working out well.

The Navy's answer to Sherm Billingsly added the following bit of information concerning Ensign Fred Crocker, a frequent visitor at the aforementioned establishment (Note: Anyone knowing both parties involved in the following quotation must allow for some slight exaggeration of fact lest the information included be interpreted as a libelous insinuation): "Fred ("Fats") Crocker has been spending most of his time trying to work back into shape. He's challenged me to several squash matches, but I'm waiting until he gets down to my size."

According to Randy, Monk Spencer is also in the Norfolk area, "enjoying shore duty in 0.N.I. (?)" at the base there. Monk is all set to abandon bachelorhood next summer. The bride to be is Pat Knight, hometown and "educational establishment from which" unknown at present.

Tim Anderson just returned from sea duty, and has entered UDT school. Tim and wife Mary are expecting the stork sometime this spring

Not to be outdone by their Naval allies, the Dartmouth contingent at the Aberdeen proving grounds had their scribe, Bill Conrad, send the latest news from the Army. Bill's in the same training class as Mike Gorton, Jack Cogswell and Dick Hopkins. Brooks Parker has just left for Germany where he'll be stationed with Morgan McGuire.

Al - Palmquist is about to hang up his khakis and return to civilian life while Howie Wiesser takes over his job as Allied Liaison Officer.

Bill Conrad added that when he pulled into Austin a year ago, Mo Kaufmann pulled out, headed for the University of Minnesota and snow after a year of Southern climes. Jack Fitzgerald is in a Hamilton standard training program after completing his military training

Blake Irons has just completed his eight weeks of basic training in the army at Ft. Benning, Ga., and awaits his assignment to more specialized training at another base.

Hank Stephenson, Bill Wilbur and Warren Peterson have all been drafted, however, Hank's entry was delayed by an operation that will keep him civilianized until June. Meanwhile he's recuperating and looks forward to returning to work with Socony Mobil Oil late this month.

Lt. Jack Welsh writes from jolly old England where he is now stationed as an auditor with the USAF. Jack plans to be on the Isle for the next two and a half years.

Jim Alexander writes from Pine Beach, N. J., where he's a faculty officer at the Admiral Farragut Academy. Jim's engaged as of Thanksgiving to Ann Fischer of Cincinnati a 1955 graduate of Denison and the recipient of an M.A. in American History from the University of Wisconsin. Jim picked up his Master's in Russian History at the same institution, and is looking forward to working towards a Ph.D. in German or Balkan History at Cornell or Princeton next year.

I blush at the latest word from Roy Hill, namely that John Stonehill is not (as I put him) "in the service and on his way to Europe." As of December 12, at any rate, he was quite civilian, in his second year of architectural school at Yale, and host at a "great party" after the Yale-Princeton (could this be?) football game.

Sky, as usual, forwarded a wealth of information on the Dartmouth 55's in the New York area, and I shall quote in brief a part of his latest epistle, that should interest most of us - concerning the Big Green-Princeton football contest, "Princeton was too much!! What a great game. (Bernie Si ski nd. Jed and Sue' Isaacs, Barry Rubins and date, me and date had a fine time Friday night and all day Saturday, at the game and afterwards. We went over to the Colonial Club - as did all the other D's in town, and took over the place easily. John Callahan, Red Perkins, Jed and many others had a great time rubbing in the 19-0 score." I imagine Princeton men the country over received much the same treatment from their Indian acquaintances. I'm sure that most of us were there at the Colonial Club in spirit after such a terrific ending to a pretty fair season.

Dave Page continues to do a fine job at Harvard Law. His latest achievement - being elected to the Board of Student Advisors. Sixteen high ranking students from the second and third year classes make up this group which administers the Law Club system at the school.

Lt. Skip Hance was married to Alice Fridlund of Tenafly, N. J., on December 6. Alice was a student at Mount Holyoke prior to the wedding. Skip has just returned from Korea and is currently stationed at Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, N. M., where the couple set up their tepee after a honeymoon trip through California and New Mexico.

Phil Reilly will marry Joan Murphy of Edgewood, R. I., in a ceremony to take place next August. Joan is a senior at the Rhode Island College of Education.

Harlan Jessup married Shirley Hemphill of Spring Lake, N. J. Shirley is a Vassar alumna and was employed by the U. S. Patent Office in Washington,' D. C„ prior to her marriage. Harlan is an Ensign in the Navy, currently aboard the U.S.S. Fisher operating out of Boston.

John Mac Lean is engaged to Joy Pavlik of Kenilworth, Ill. Joy, a Northwestern graduate, and John, now in business in the Chicago area, will wed this spring. Tom Kinnamon is engaged to Chris Huchel of Great Neck, Long Island. Chris is a graduate of Colby Junior College. Tom is currently with the Mellon National Bank and Trust Co., Pittsburgh, Pa.

Thornton Jenkins is engaged to Elizabeth Jane George of Schenectady, N. Y., and Alma, Mexico. Elizabeth is a junior at Mount Holyoke, and Thornton is now a senior at Union College.

The Pete Packards have been blessed with their second little Indian. This time it's a boy - name unavailable. Pete is a Lieutenant with the Air Force and is currently stationed at Moore A.B. in Mission, Tex., where he's taking his primary pilot training.

As they say in the military, "that's about all she wrote" for this month - or should I say "all you wrote." Thanks for all the letters, etc., etc. So long for now.

Leo C. Murphy Jr. '54 has been named StaffAssistant to the Manager of Stromberg-Carlson in San Diego. Murphy, who was a NavyAviator for eight years, lives in San Diego withhis wife Madeline and three sons.

Lt. Michael H. Buck '55, at Harlingen Air Force Base in Texas, checks a periscopic sextant before taking off on a navigation training mission in the T-29 behind him.
