The Texas summer rolls on with 90 degree temperatures, while my young, pea-green cousin (Class of '60) writes of snow and sleet on the freshman trip. Nevertheless, having sampled southwestern weather and football, I could think of nothing more welcome to this vagabond reporter than an Indian summer weekend in New England, and a crisp Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. By now the Hanover Plain in its crazy quilt of autumn color reverberates to the shouts of those newly introduced to Dartmouth football - (and winning football at that).
Before we get down to the inevitable and unavoidable rush to the altar, something should be said for the would-be junior executives, who have thus far been avoided by me, and have successfully avoided the sticky fingers of Uncle Sam. Bernie Siskind writes (on stationery stolen from the Carlton Hotel, Cannes, France) that he successfully put-off working for the summer, and spent several enjoyable weeks touring Europe. After visiting France, Spain, Germany, Italy and Austria, Bernie settled on the Riviera where he admits to have become fairly adept at "scrounging" off family friends. (This was the extent of pertinent information offered by Mr. S., as the letter ended abruptly with reference to "fast approaching 'tini time.")
So that we won't receive a warped picture of the typical life of the aspiring young college graduate, let's quickly switch the scene to the wilds of Maine - "Augusty" to be exact - where Hank Stephenson is presently pumping petrol as a trainee for Socony Mobil Oil. After completing this phase of his "from the ground up" training, Hank will go into an intensive course preparing him for the sales end of the business.
Likewise in the training end of "big business" is Bill Wilbur, who currently owns onethird interest in a cute secretary for the Colgate-Palmolive Company, and holds the impressive title of administrative assistant there. Two other Tuck grads, Dick Morris and Jack Doyle have been plucked from the New York scene by Our Mutual Uncle.

Somehow in the rush of finishing up last June, I'm afraid I neglected at least one newcomer to the '55 fold. Doug and Joan Melville were blessed with a 8-lb 11-ounce little he Indian last May, by the name of John Hunter Melville. I'm sure there must be several other additions as of late, so don't hesitate to let me know about them.
I was happy to receive notice of the John C. Glover Memorial Scholarship yesterday. John Ballard, Pete Buhler, Dave Conlan,Harry Lewis and Jim Venman deserve a lot of credit for the fine way in which they presented their plea - and there never was one more deserving our answering. As they so well stated it, John was a humble man but in his quietness and humility he represented a great force in our Class- our one truly great athlete - a source of pride and spirit for us all. We owe it to John to put everything we have into this task - as he would have.
That about winds it up for another month. So long for now.
