The "beep-beep" of the Soviet "Sputnik" has successfully stolen the spotlight from other news items of worldly interest. However, Dartmouth '55's, not to be outdone by the orbiting spheroid, have continued to claim their share of the printed page- especially in affairs of a matrimonial nature. So, to be fashionable, we'll orbit the girdled earth with old "Sput" and take a look at the fifty-five family roaming thereon.

You all remember that "Dartmouth In Town" board that's located in the Inn lobby. Yours truly continually receives the white 3 by 5 cards commonly displayed there, and these present somewhat of a problem with their limited information. If you've ever looked at one closely, you'll remember they give only class, name and date of visit. All this jibberish is really just an excuse in advance for the brevity of the following news items. "Chris Buxton, Pat Alwin and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Justice were all back in Hanover in early September." ... (That's all there is to it. See what I mean?)

Also back in Hanover, but for longer duration, is Don Mackay who will be an instructor in Great Issues for a one-year term. Don was originally a '55 and left in '53 to serve his tour in the Army. He graduated this past June and is the second member of the graduating class to serve in this instructor capacity. This practice was begun in '56 as a means of providing a bridge between the senior class and faculty steering committee.

Another news item from the Plain, Al Cooke has received a grant for graduate study in geography at McGill during the coming year. While we're in the educational vein, we should give recognition to MorrisKaufman who received his M.S. from the University of Minnesota last July. Morris concentrated on geology during his course of study.

"Shep" Jackson was recently promoted to Pfc at Fort Myer, Va. Shep is with the Army's 7th Machine Recorder Unit of the 9423 rd Technical Services Battalion. Shep was employed by IBM and worked with General Electric in Pittsfield, Mass., prior to his induction last year.

John Callahan put his theatrical talents to good use for Uncle Sam, directing Mr. Marilyn Monroe's prize winning play, "All My Sons" for the Aberdeen Proving Grounds Post Players. John left the service in September and plans to attend the Yale School of Dramatics.

"Pfc Bur" - more commonly known as Bill Wilbur - wrote a voluminous note from La Rochelle, France - about 40 miles above Bordeaux on the south coast of France. Bill is in a finance and accounting detachment there. He seems to be thriving on French victuals and on the feminine scenery offered at the many beaches in that area. He infers, however, that the local malted beverages aren't of the quality dispensed by the Tanzi brothers.

My eyes are resting on a newspaper clipping with a half-inch headline that reads, "SPa Alexander Leaves Message". First, it might be pointed out that SP2 Alexander is our own Bruce. On first surveying this headline, my guess was that Bruce had mysteriously disappeared, leaving some cryptic note behind as the only clue to his whereabouts. Or, another thought came to me, he must have gone on some secret military mission to the Arctic and inscribed some long-to-be-remembered and oft-to-be-quoted phrase in the frozen wastes. However, as it turned out, there was nothing quite so romantic or adventurous involved. The truth is that Bruce is no longer assistant editor for the Fort Monmouth Message (a newspaper). He'd been sports editor there since Nov. '55. Bruce wrote and directed a musical comedy while at the base. He's now out of the service and with the Phoenix of Hartford Insurance Companies in Hartford.

Before we get going full force here, we should mention that in sorting clippings a few yellowed and dusty items appeared that had obviously been passed over previously - apologies to those involved, especially Bill Blanchard and Edna Janowski who were engaged last April.
