Dartmouth's varsity track team had a fair season, winning three dual meets and losing two, but finished a disappointing eighth (in a field of ten) at the Indoor Heptagonal Championships.
Since last month the Indians defeated Boston University 59-45, but lost to Yale 66½ to 42.
Against both Boston University and Yale, Captain Doug Brew set the pace to win both the mile and the 1,000-yard run. In the Yale meet he set a new Dartmouth cage record in the 1,000 with a clocking of 2:13.3. George Bixby also won the 35pound weight toss against B. U. and Yale and Jim Wooster did likewise in the 600-yard run. The Dartmouth relay team of Brew, Wooster, Bob Rapp and Jim Mueller also won in both these meets.
Dartmouth entered six men in the IC4A Meet at New York's Madison Square Garden, with Brew in the mile, Chip Hartenstein and Joe Graham in the sprints, George Bixby in the 35-pound weight toss, and Jim Wooster and Jim Mueller in the 600-yard run. Only Bixby got through to the finals and the husky senior proceeded to heave the 35-pound weight 59'5¾" to break his own College record by some 2½ feet and win the IC4A championship.
However, in the Heptagonals a week later, Bixby had a shoulder injury which held up only for one toss and he had to settle for fifth place. Doug Brew turned in a 4:18.6 mile to retain his Heptagonal title, while the Dartmouth relay team of Rapp, Brew, Mueller and Wooster placed fourth. Phil Drescher tied for fifth in the high jump and Joe Graham earned fifth in the 50-yard dash.
