The major news this past month on the wrestling front has been the announcement by Director of Athletics Red Rolfe that, starting next fall, the DCAC will add wrestling to the list of official Dartmouth sports, with full schedules for both varsity and freshman teams and a coach, Frank Kapral.
And Dartmouth's informal team this year will provide a strong nucleus for next year as it won five meets, lost three and tied one, while one Dartmouth wrestler won the 177-pound New England championship and three others were in the tournament quarter-finals.
Fred Pitzner, a senior, won the 177-pound title by stopping all competition at that weight, while Hank Reuling at 167 pounds and John Chilson at 157 went through to the quarter-finals. Bob Bickell, heavyweight, placed third in his division, while the Dartmouth team, with only these four men entered in the tournament, placed seventh - a good start on a first- year basis.
All four of these men had impressive records during the regular season, with Chilson winning seven matches, losing one; Reuling winning three and losing two; Pitzner winning seven and losing one; and Bickell winning six, losing one and drawing in one match.
Since last month, the wrestlers were edged by Tufts 14-12, lost to Colgate 24-5, tied Amherst 12-12, and defeated M.I.T. 12-8.
Clarence Jellis, head groundskeeper for the DCAC and the friend of countless Dartmouth athletes for nearly thirty years, died on March 7. He joined the staff in 1938 and was in charge of all playing fields and special construction work for the DCAC.
