I wonder how many of you were tuned in to the televised Bruins-Detroit hockey game on March 8. This was one of the nationally televised Saturday afternoon hockey programs that gained so many fans for ice hockey. Well, if you were, you probably were much entertained by the between-periods game put on by a group of Boston "peewees," youngters up to the age of, I think, twelve or thirteen. Although I didn't see the contest, being in Hanover for the Varsity-Alumni hockey game, I understand it was a thriller. The game was settled on the basis of one goal scored towards the very end by young Mr. Kent Parrot, son of Scott Parrot. You probably also recognized the name Billy Riley, whose Dad played some hockey for Dartmouth, but it was Kent who scored the goal on a pretty play. Scotty has for some time been vitally interested in organized athletics for youngsters of the "peewee" age and not only has he become one of the prime movers of the peewee hockey league around Boston but he has established a similar league in football in his home town of Winchester. Scott's league in hockey has been so successful that the boys play a regular schedule on artificial ice rinks with a playoff and all. One Saturday morning there were in the vicinity of 100 "peewees" skating madly over the ice on the new Belmont Hill rink so enthusiastic are they about the program.
While on the subject of hockey, the game between the Dartmouth Varsity and the Alumni was this year played for the benefit of the George Pulliam Memorial Fund. This is a fund established in memory of George and for the direct benefit of his wife Maxine, and George's children, by a group of his friends and associates in Providence. Dick Rondeau '44 is the man behind the fund and if any of you would like to contribute something in George's memory either Dick or myself would be extremely happy to handle your contribution. I sincerely hope some of you will.
While digging through my files in search of some information, I stumbled upon several items of dated but significant interest. The first involves the promotion of Vincent Canby to the position of news editor of the Motion Picture Herald of Quigley Publications. As this occurred some time last summer, Vin may well be the President by now. Anyway, the event is now duly recorded. The second is a sequel to a bit that I mentioned last fall. It regards the substantiation of a report I gave on the marriage of "Moldy Al" Worthen. That worthy was indeed married last August to Miss Marion Loweth of West Hempstead, L. I. My previous report was a welldocumented. rumor. This is the straight dope.
Two items concerning New Jerseyites: Wally Barnes has recently joined the law firm of Bourne, Schmid, Burke & Noll of Summit: while Wilfred Rinkor has been named commercial staff supervisor at the N. J. Bell Telephone's Newark headquarters. Wally, a Yale Law School graduate, serves in the Army Reserve as a captain with the Judge Advocate General's office, and is an instructor in business law at the Rutgers School of Business Administration. Wilfred is extremely active in civic affairs in Irvington, serving as Vice President of the Rotary Club and on various committees of the Chamber of Commerce. Active in Boy Scouting, he served as District Commissioner in 1955 and as District Advancement Chairman last year. He also was a vice chairman in the recent United Appeal campaign.
Five fortunate fellow classmates were able to revisit the Hanover Plain this winter and drink in the College scene. They were Mr. and Mrs. John Robinson, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Simpson, Mr. and Mrs. Russ Palmer, Bud Miller, and George Pierce. All of you should try the invigorating, healthy Dartmouth air as soon as possible. That's Dr. Cutler's prescription for renewed vigor. Forget Geritol and live a little.
Where to find them: Lisle Carter, a member of Watson, Carter, and Smith, 305 Broadway, The City; Dr. Harold Habein, Mayo Foundation, Rochester, Minn.; Paul Meegan in Buffalo, N. Y. (incidentally, Paul, been to Cataumet lately?) Rupe Ray in Pasadena, Calif.; Bill Rockwell, 7643 Tripp, Skokie, Ill.; and Joe Harron in Scarsdale, N. Y.
A brief reminder that the Alumni Fund drive is going full blast. Add your fuel to the fire.
