Back in the States at this writing and finally the mails have caught up with me, so we're off to the races with what's with '52s hither and yon. With the Ides of March fast approaching us, my thoughts wend their way back to a school called Tuck where, despite the laudings of free enterprise and the weak protestations as regards taxes, the securityminded are beginning to feel a draft on their green-backed necks. A reflection of same came to my attention in the form of a questionnaire on which I was to give advice as to what the best deal is in this outfit. I was not the sole recipient of the poll. In fact I understand Gallup has nothing on this association which calls itself "The Future Boy Ensigns." All I can say is their fate, despite interrogation directed at those of us already in the service, is in the hands of greater powers. Nevertheless, good luck, Hucksters.
Letter Department
The following news comes via the grapevine as reported by those sainted individuals who have sent a few lines my way. Coast Guardites recently commissioned include Bill Kay,Norm Jeavons and Jack Uncles. Vinnie Rathburn is a graduate of the Engineers Leaders School at Fort Belvoir, Va. More at OCS in Newport include Bill Ford, Bruce Sturtevant and Bob Freeh. New leathernecks are BillFisher, Ed Fitzgerald, Jack Flitner, Bill Hastings and Chuck Knudson. The last two are a little newer than the others, but they all expect field work from what I can gather. As for the business world, Tycoons Inc., etc., more '52s who come under the heading of executives prospectus are Dutch Farisee, Phil Chappell, Nick Bradley at Schenectady and TonyDubuque in Pittsfield, Mass. - GE's all.
Met Taylor is with New England Tel & Tel, while Gene Brooks spends his working day with Westinghouse in Pittsburgh. Pete Stanley is another phoneman at New England T & T and Ted Myers is in the chemical business with Monsanto in Springfield, Mass.
Headliners
The following made the newsprint recently for various and sundry reasons listed, as a matter of fact, under a wide variety of topics - the society page excluded for the moment. The Springfield Republican uses the title "Coach" before the name of Paul Sanderson on their sport pages as they cover Suffield Academy's hoopsters. Dave L. Larson recently received the American Spirit of Honor Medal. He's wearing Air Force blues at the present. Jumping Joe Lyons won the class B event on pair of three slotters off the jump at Bear Mountain last January with Herb Drury placing sixth in a field of 26. The Order of Chevalier was recently conferred upon Bob Millhouse. Bob is at the Med School in Hanover. Jim Ketchum, who was with the class but transferred during his Junior year, received his B.A. at Columbia and is now at the Cornell Med School. He recently won a statewide scholarship for professional study in medicine and from all reports is burning up the field down in the big city. Drew Sleeper won his wings last December and is now a jet jockey with the dry land flyboys. Dick Swicker of DBS fame is interrupting a career with NBC to serve a hitch with the 34th Field Artillery Battalion at Fort Dix, while Bob Williams has had Second Lt. before his name since September last - in the Marines, that is.
Marriages, Past and Future ... and so on Got quite a backlog, so I'll start with engagements. Because of the time lag some of these may have evolved into matrimony but here's the score sheet as I read it now. JoePierson is engaged to Miss Barbara Jean Scott. She was a Colby gal and is now secretary to the Dean there. Janet Lucille Nelson is a prospective June bride of one Kirk Spurr. She's from Missouri and graduated from Wells College. Bill Quimby is engaged to Emily Niedert. She attended Lawrence College in Wisconsin and the Cornell School of Nursing. A Barnard College junior is the bride-to-be of Al Cohen. She's from Clifton, N. J. Al left the class before his Senior year and is now a successful law student at Columbia where he is editor of the Law Review ...nuff said. A Frederick, Md., senior at Hood College, Miss Noradel Truxal, is a prospective summer bride of Randy Wilson, USNR. Pete Zischke, now 1A and wearing GI gear, is engaged to Alice Oliver of Piedmont, Calif. Ed Christi's fiancee is another Hood College junior, Miss Susan Noble Clement. BobCallander, now at Princeton Theological Seminary, was recently betrothed to Marilyn Berg, who is attending Beaver College in Jenkinstown, Pa. Bill Davis, Ensign that is, and Ursula Meyerhof, late of Colby Junior are affianced. A Mount Holyoke gal, Sandra Elizabeth Fitch, is the reason for a wedding when Dick Watt's name is mentioned. Sy Grolnick is engaged to Barbara Grodnick. Both are attending the New York State University College of Medicine at New York. Jo McCullum, late of Vassar - last June, and Jack Shuman, Ens. USNR, are engaged as of this writing but are scheduled to take the vows early in April. Al is another Marine.
Gene Cesari has about half a year to go as a Marine. He is in California at present. As I have it, he hopes to take up where he left off in June of '51 and finish his college career.
Enough for now. One reminder, though. As you read this, the Alumni Fund Drive will be in full swing. You know by now why we need the dough since most of us are full-fledged taxpayers. Bernie tells me a sawbuck is par for the course, but a few strokes more (or less if necessary) is good for your game. Whatever you do, at least take a swing at the ball. See you in May - wonderful May!
P.S. Thanks for the mail, Bob, Don, Met, Larry, Ed, Spook, Bill, Bob, Al and Ken.
