Just thirty years ago this spring Coach Tom Dent introduced lacrosse to Dartmouth and since then his Big Green lacrosse teams have consistently been among the best in the East. Unfortunately, on the basis of the spring trip showing and practice sessions to date, it looks as though the 1957 aggregation would not be so strong as recent teams.

Even with eight lettermen back, Coach Dent still has some major gaps to fill on defense and his midfield is not as strong as he would want.

During spring vacation, the Dartmouth lacrosse team won its first two scrimmage games, defeating Swarthmore 10-3 and the Long Island Lacrosse Club 12-4. However, it lost to Hofstra 16-10, to Baltimore University 15-7, and to Washington and Lee 11-6.

The starting lineup for Dartmouth has lettermen Skip Bohn, Doc Rice and Dick Frisch teamed with sophomore Don Abel. Bohn scored 20 goals last year, Rice ten and Frisch six - so the Indians have the scoring punch needed.

At midfield are three veterans, Captain Charles Grafton, Cal Perry and Clayt Freeman, with Dan Serby, Dick Mann, and Phil Livingston. Grafton, Perry, and Freeman have been the starters thus far.

To bolster a defense riddled by graduation, Coach Dent has shifted Dave Pratt from midfield and John Benisch and Dick Pew from the attack line. These men along with sophomore Bill Morton are beginning to help, but there is still a major problem here.

The loss of Clem Malin at goal has hurt. During the spring trip sophomores George Hess and Mike Hurd alternated, but recently Randy Malin, brother of Clem Malin and a standout soccer goalie, has taken over in the nets and he may be the answer.
