Milder days with the faintest breath of winter winds remaining and the traditional appearance of duckboards on campus are the harbingers of spring in Hanover. The winter sports programs have ended but the baseball, lacrosse and tennis teams could hardly wait for the basketball floor to come up before beginning indoor practice. By the time these words are in print Dartmouth's baseball, tennis, golf and lacrosse teams, plus the Dartmouth crews, will be well south of Hanover, embarking on spring vacation contests prior to the official opening of their spring schedules in April.

Certainly the most disappointing news of the past month concerns the Big Green basketball team, which after a mid-season spurt lost the crucial Yale game in Hanover by one point and then dropped a league game to Harvard to lose all chance for retaining the Ivy League title. Dartmouth finished second in the Ivy League with a 10-4 mark and wound up the season with 18 wins and seven losses. Dartmouth's rejuvenated hockey team, fighting up the comeback trail, tied for second in the Ivy League (5-3) and compiled an overall record of 13 wins and 11 losses. The Big Green swimmers, strong as usual, posted eight wins and only three defeats, while the squash team won nine matches and lost five, the track team had three victories and two defeats in dual competi- tion, and the wrestling team won five matches, lost three and tied one. Combined totals for all winter varsity teams show 56 wins, 31 losses and one tie, a ,642 batting average for the season, which is better than any recent year.

As usual, the Dartmouth freshman teams did better than their varsity counterparts, with Tony Lupien's '60 basketball squad winning 12 and losing two, while the freshman hockey team had 11 wins and only four defeats. The freshman swimmers split even with three wins and three defeats, the track team had a 3-2 record, squash a 2-2 record, and the freshman wrestling team won in its only appearance. Freshman totals reveal 28 wins and 10 defeats, while combined totals for varsity and freshman teams add up to an impressive 88 victories, 44 defeats and one tie.

Turning now to the individual sports, let's take a last look at the winter teams before the baseballers, lacrossemen, golfers, tennis players and oarsmen take over the athletic scene in Hanover.
