Dartmouth's 1957 golf team under the able tutelage of "the old pro," Tommy Keane, continues to hold up the fine golfing reputation established by recent teams, posting a record of nine wins against only two defeats in dual competition. The Big Green golfers also finished a respectable fourth at the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association matches, behind Navy, Penn State and Yale.
Last month's report that the Big Green had depth but lacked individual standout golfers was borne out at the E.I.G.A. matches. Rod Frates, who shot a 149 in the 36-hole medal play, was the only Indian golfer to qualify for the 16-man match play round. He lost out there to Bill Davidson of Penn State in the quarter-final round, one up. Harvey Bloom, the number two Dartmouth player, posted a score of 155, followed by Hank Milton with 160 and Captain Bruce McDonald with 162.
Prior to the Eastern tournament, the Big Green golfers had swept over Brown 7-0, Amherst 5-2, Union 6-1, and Williams 5½ to 1½ losing only to a strong Army team by a 6-1 count. The only other defeat of the season was handed out by Navy which edged Dartmouth 4-3 in April. In the most recent match, Dartmouth defeated Harvard 4½ to 2½, and faced Middlebury in late May to close out another highly successful season on the links.
Buck Latimore, Steve Jonas and Chap Jacobus were the other regular team members this spring behind Frates, Bloom, Milton and Captain McDonald.
Track Captain Doug Brew '57, in his last home appearance, nipped John Murphy of Manhattanat the finish in the 880-yard event on May 10. Brew also won the mile run in 4:19.3.
