Your secretary has cast the lumbago adrift and is now back in his usual condition which is not normal. Like other secretaries, I find it a struggle to get news of the classmates. You have been told again and again that each one of you is the source of the news. If you remain silent, then there is no news which can be passed on to the other members of the Class. As one of the worst offenders in this line, I now realize how contemptible I have acted toward our prior secretaries. If I can change my ways, there is no reason why you cannot do the same. " '98 UP" always brought an immediate response, and so I shout " '98 UP."
"Bucky" Chandler is complaining about the picture taken at our 60th. He says it is awful. He compares it with the picture taken at our 50th. I feel that the camera made a good registration of what it saw. He seems to be unwilling to consider that there is an interim of ten years. Time may not have been kind to us. We are not like women who look younger every time you see them or at least you say so to give them a build up, and then enjoy their smiles. Try it. From experience, I know it works.
It was nice to hear from Bob Osborne, but there was a note of sadness included as he reported the death of his wife on August 4, 1958. He has two daughters who are looking out for his welfare. He is planning to go to Florida after Christmas, although his doctor is expressing opposition.
I hope that Oscar Tabor has finished the harvesting of the hay and all other crops, so that he may attend and obtain prizes at the many agricultural fairs to be held in his vicinity. I understand that he lassoed a moose,' has made a trailer for its transportation, and is in for blue ribbons as he expects no competition.
It is with great satisfaction I can report that "Ev" Snow is making headway in his fight to overcome his indisposition and is going to continue in the same line.
Gleason is still at Ayer, evidently in good health, but not traveling to any extent.
"Ike" Seelman passed the summer at his camp at Yankee Lake, N. Y. His wife Gertrude did not fare very well as she picked up a virus and has entertained all that goes along with that affliction.
Joe Bartlett is in the news as an expectant great-grandfather. The happy couple is his grandson, Samuel B. Bartlett '57, and his wife Joan. October is the month.
