Playing in the Yale Bowl on a fine autumn afternoon, the 1958 eleven broke a five-year Eli jinx and gave Coach Blackman his first victory over Yale by a 22-14 score. The Indians got away fast, piling up all 22 points in the first half, but then had to hold on as Yale fought back to dominate the second half and score twice.

Early in the first period the Big Green got its first tally as Bill Gundy passed from the Yale 35-yard line to halfback Jim Burke on the 15 and Burke carried across from there. Another Gundy to Burke pass was good for a two-point conversion.

In the second period the Indians marched 77 yards in fifteen plays for their second score. Fullback Brian Hepburn and halfbacks Jake Crouthamel and Jim Burke paced the ground attack, with several Gundy passes also clicking. The score came when Burke slashed over from three yards out, and a moment later Crouthamel slid through a gaping hole at tackle for two more points.

Later in the same period Brian Hepburn intercepted a Yale pass to start a goalward march, with Hepburn finally diving over the middle for Dartmouth's third and final tally.

Yale struck back with fury in the second half as quarterback Tom Singleton sharpened his passing eye for the first tally and then got a pass interference penalty which set up a second tally. The Indians hit back in the final period, driving to the Yale one-yard line before being halted, but then the Elis roared downfield to the Dartmouth 12-yard line as the minutes ticked by, and it seemed like the 1957 game in reverse. However, the Green defense held and the Indians finally got the ball with one minute left and ran out the clock for a well-deserved victory.
