The February 5, 1958 dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel must have been a wonderful occasion. First, because this very special affair honored President-Emeritus Ernest Martin Hopkins on the occasion of his 80th birthday, and secondly because it gave all Dartmouth Alumni the opportunity to kick-off an extensive development program leading up to our 200th Anniversary in 1969. I am eager to hear from you who attended, so I may pass on to all of us who were unable to attend the particulars of this unique occasion. Those of you who have not received literature explaining the 200th Anniversary Development Program please contact me immediately so I can secure for you this important information on Dartmouth's future plans.
We indeed are very proud to have one of our own on the permanent staff of this development organization. Gil Osborn writes: "It's a wonderful feeling to be associated with the College again, and I'm looking forward to meeting up with a good number of 53's during the months ahead. According to my calculations, I achieved what I'm sure must be the dream of most Dartmouth men approximately 4 years and 7 months after our commencement - and as such I'm wondering whether I may lay claim among our '53 crew to that of being the 'first one back?" (Unless information is received to the contrary by April 15, 1958, Gil will be duly awarded this honor by the class, for fulfilling our dream faster than we could.) I hasten to add that Ed Boyle, John Corcoran, Dick Lombard,Dick Cahn, Nate Burkan, and Dick Calkins are giving their services to this program on a voluntary, regional basis. More about this undertaking at a later date.
From Berlin, Germany, comes a note from Frank Lee announcing his marriage to Lieselotte Wiesler, of Berlin, on November go, 1957. Frank writes: "Since my arrival in Berlin last March, I have been with the International Commodities Corporation, and the Internationale Fruchtprodukte GmbH, both of Frankfurt and Berlin. The firms are, in the main, fruit importers."
Lee and Joyce Dennis own up to the fact that "we are two Yankees who love the South." September of last year saw Lee entraining for Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina after finishing up the second half of his internship at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital. Lee's duties at the 4453rd USAF Hospital initially orbited around the local clinics. After six weeks he then became the third member of an OB-GYN team, which is now giving him invaluable surgical experience. Joyce announces that their family grew to four in number when Shushil rejoined her brother, Putka Sahib. "Our black and white parti-colored cocker spaniels occupy many an evening and our dull moments evaporate with their charm and exuberance." Both of the Dennises are finding fun also in working with the Sumter, S.C., Little Theater on such productions as Tea House of theAugust Moon, The Hitchhiker, and Guest inthe House.
Congratulations to Fred Entwistle on the occasion of his January 11 wedding in Milwaukee, Wis. Fred's wife, Ann, graduated from Mount Holyoke in June 1956 and made her home in Milwaukee. Fred writes that Ray Luebbe, who roomed with him his last year at Dartmouth, was one of the ushers. Fred is now half-way through his medical internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, and expects to go onto active duty with the Navy in June. The newlyweds are residing in Chicago.
News from Fritz Harrell in Shaker Heights, Ohio, reveals his June 20 marriage to the former Mary Walsh, who had lived next door to the home of his parents in Shaker Heights for the past twelve years. Fritz says "that during our 'at home' periods during high school and college days, each of us had many times fixed the other up for dates with various of our acquaintances, but we first dated on my home leaves from the Army during an extended vacation from Dartmouth 1952-1955. I am glad I finally had sense enough to look in my own back yard! We are now living in Shaker Heights while I am attending the School of Law at Western Reserve University in Cleveland." Fritz goes on to give us some notes about other 53's - namely:
Vic Cannon acting atypical in "The Village" while Pursuing things academic at Columbia. Dick ( Blossom") Blum making many local phone calls and probably not a few long distance ones on the evening of December 22 to tell some of us — with a husky voice - of his engagement to Edie Felinger of Shaker Heights, Wellesley '59. Dick Markey in his last year at the Medical School here at Western Reserve.
Jack Sackett working at Parker Appliance Company here in Cleveland, happily married, and now settled with his wife Denny and children in a new home.
"Socks" Brewster somehow prevailing upon his wife Suzy to permit him to continue wearing impossibly colored vests and luxuriating in a mustache that is bushy enough to hide both smiles and frowns.
Jottings:
... Al Collins recently joined the staff of The English Shop of West Hartford, Conn. - a men's clothing store.... Jim Cartmell has been appointed manager of the Burlington Branch, Cartmell Sales and Service, Inc.
... Stu Struever presented the unique story of "Buried Kaskaskia" at the Knox College, Ill., convocation in the early fall. "Buried Kaskaskia" concerns the excavation of an ancient city of Kaskaskia which yielded remains of people dating back to 5,000 years before the birth of Christ. The discovery has been hailed as the unearthing of an American "Troy." Stu was one of four scientists to unearth the centuries-old skeletons and to be named as assistant to the director of this expedition.
... Jack Upham writes that he is with the Armstrong Cork Company in the Special Promotions Section of their Advertising Department. He is charged with writing and producing movies, sales films, and slide strips, plus four annual sales conventions. That's a challenge for any magician, Jack.
... This was in my mail box the other day: "My name is Peter, I was born January 4. 1958, I weigh 6 lbs, 15 ozs, I belong to Jim and Ruth Goldstone." Congratulations to you both! -
And now a closing memo: - Remember not to leave your purse in church. Some may think it is a direct answer to prayer.
