As your secretary was closing this month's column, we learned of the tragic passing of Jim Carroll, who was killed on August 17 by lightning during a violent thunderstorm which occurred while he was attending an outdoor barbecue in Oakridge, N. J. Jim was employed by Parsons Brinkerhoff Halt & McDonald, consulting engineers and was living temporarily in Oakridge while working on a new dam. After leaving Hanover he served with the 93rd Engineers at Fort Bragg, N. C., as a first lieutenant.
'Fifty-fours have lost another highly-respected classmate, and the Class with Jim's closest friends extends its deepest sympathies to Jim's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James B. Carroll of 759 Wilmot Rd., Scarsdale, N. Y.
While the Penn-Green gridiron encounter left much to be desired, the large gathering of Hanoverians after the game was worth the price of the fare. At a reception, held appropriately enough in the Egyptian Room of the Penn Museum, your correspondent uncovered quite a few recognizable relics among the artifacts, including Ken Meyer,Fred Page, Tom Sayles, Dune Roberts, JonBugbee, Rick Hartman, Dick Buffington, Dave Metz, Chuck Hooper, Jim Love, RipCoffin, Pete Geithner, Lee Huff, John Heston, Ralph Destino, Bud Addis, and DingHarris.
Also on hand were a number of newlyweds: Dick and Judy (Webb) Danforth, who are at Penn where Dick is pushing for his M.A. at the School of Fine Arts, department of city planning. Judy, a Mass. General Hospital and Simmons grad, is from Milton, Mass. Jack and Yvonne (Fournier) Feldman were just back from a wedding trip. Yvonne, a Katharine Gibbs School graduate, New York City, is from Leonia, N. J. Penn medman Don Belcher and bride Sheila McLean (also a Penn grad student), who were married August 21 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, were there also.
This year is certainly the year for the decline of 'Fifty-four bachelorhood, and we are way behind in our announcements. Carol Crandle of Grand Rapids, Mich., slipped the nuptial knot around Skip Weymouth on September 15, and Mary Geller, of Atlanta, Ga„ and Wellesley, led Ed Winnick to the hitching post on June 30. Mary and Ed, who is a Yale law grad and a member of a family law firm, live in New Haven, Conn.
In June Charlie Martin and Mary Ellis of Foxboro, Mass., and the U. of New Hampshire were married. Charlie is plugging for a Ph.D. in Geology at the U. of Wisconsin. Also in June was the wedding of Bob Kenney and Mary Stinchfield. Mary is a Colby Jr. and Simmons grad from Hallowell, Me. Bob is at Holderness School, Plymouth, N. H., teaching math and physics. Phil Cooke was among the ushers.
On August 22 Clyde Smith and Ann Kimball of Newton, Mass., and Goucher College were altar-goers. Clyde is a graduate of the Art Center School in Los Angeles, Calif. The Smiths will live in New York City.
Your correspondent lowered his bachelor’s pennant to half mast in September when he became engaged to Nancy Austin of East Woodstock, Conn. A graduate of the Boston School of Practical Art, Nancy is a fashion illustrator in Boston, Mass. We are thus forced to announce a change of editorial policy this month. We unregrettably announce that we will maintain our customary bachelor's bias no longer.
Tom Corcoran and Mary Jo Litchard, a Bradford Jr. grad from Longmeadow, N. Y., were engaged in May. Tom received his Master's from Harvard Business School the following month. Lon Chaikin and Lynn Guttenberg of Great Neck, N. Y., were affianced in May. Lynn is an Endicott Jr. and Finch College grad. Greensboro (N. C.) College's Marilyn Allred announced her betrothal to Bell Laboratories' (Whippany, N. J.) John Musa in May. Marilyn is from Jacksonville, Fla.
Pete Bullis, ladened with Fulbright grant and a nomination for the international educational exchange program, headed for the Rhenish Westphalian Technical University in Aachen, Germany, where he will pursue his studies in contemporary church architecture in Europe.
John Cunningham, who is acting in New York City, has spent the last two summers with the Williamstown Theatre Foundation, Inc. in Williamstown, Mass., where he has played a number of lead roles. John, who received his MFA from Yale School of Drama, has been with the Highfield Theatre in Falmouth, Mass., and recently did a film called "The Receiving Tube Story," for General Electric.
Seave, Sally and daughter, Wendy Peters have taken up residence in Hanover, where the "Spider" was named to succeed Snuffy Smith as Associate Director of Athletics for the Big Green. Seave had been vice president and sales representative for Paul Peters and Company, cheese importers in Melrose, Mass.
We have a list of degrees gathered recently and they include: an M.A. in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design to Lo-Yi Chan; a Ph.D. in philosophy to U. of Wisconsin geology major Wilfred Bryan; a Ph.D. in chemistry from the U. of Michigan to Bob Gilman, who is now a research chemist for W. R. Grace and Co. in Clarksville, Md.; an LL.B. to Mac Lynch from the U. of Pittsburgh; a Master of Arts in Education to Bob Wellman from Western Reserve University and M.D.'s to Wes Dingman from the U. of Rochester and to Art Geller from the U. of Chicago. Wes internes at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N. Y., and Art at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Bob Rafelson is in New York City with Talent Associates, TV producers of duPont Show of the Month, Rexall specials and MGM specials. Bob has been working on the Marc Sickel Memorial Fund, which will initially sponsor a lecture in "The Seven Lively Arts," which may feature Leonard Bernstein as speaker.
Bill and Milly Mayberry and family are in Valleyview, Alberta, Canada, where Bill is pastor of the Valleyview-DeBolt-Beyanson United Church. We learned that in between 100-mile Sunday preaching trips, teaching and visiting the Mayberrys find means to support one Vietnamese, one Greek and two Korean children through the Foster Parents Plan.
Rev. Ed Keller was named to head youth work and Sunday School at Christ Church, Bloomfield-Glen Ridge, N. J., and Rev. David Ellms served as assistant at Trinity Church, Lenox, Mass., and is teaching English at Lenox School.
