CORRECTION - We reported erroneously last month that quarterback Bill Gundy had been given the Sports Illustrated award as the "Back of the Week" at the Dartmouth football banquet in January. Actually halfback Jake Crouthamel and Captain Al Krutsch were both honored by S.I. Next year Captain Gundy will have his chance!
Mitch Engle, center halfback on the Dartmouth soccer team, has been elected captain of the team for 1959. Engle played in only four games last fall because of a leg injury but is a two-year veteran and captained Dartmouth's freshman soccer team.
Two other captains elected this past month were Bob Brower of Neponsit, N. Y., a guard, for the freshman basketball squad, and Warren Loomis of Needham, Mass., a first-line wing, for the Pea Green hockey team.
The Winter Olympic games at Squaw Valley next year will have a distinct Green tinge. Malcolm McLane '46 is Chairman of the Olympic Ski Games Committee, with Dr. Amos Little '39 and Al Merrill, Dartmouth ski coach, members of the same committee. Bill Beck '53 is coach of the U.S. Men's Alpine Team and Dave Lawrence '51 is coach of the Women's Alpine Team, while Dick Durrance and Steve Bradley, '39 classmates, will be Chief of Course and Assistant Chief of Course for the Alpine events at the Olympics. John Rand '38, D.O.C. executive director, will handle communications for the Olympic cross-country races, while Bill Danforth '41 will be in charge of scoring for that event. There are probably some others involved whose names will be reported on later.
The Dartmouth tennis team has been invited to enter the second annual Cherry Blossom Festival Tournament in Washington on March 23-25, to compete against Georgetown, George Washington and Lehigh. With a veteran team, Coach Red Hoehn believes the Big Green could win this first tournament of the spring season.
