This happened to be a banner month for mail. The news therein will compose a bulky part of this issue, methinks. To all you guys who have written, let me apologize for not answering all your letters. Of late, I've only been responding to those requiring an answer.
Heard from Rink DeWitt several weeks ago. He's been an Air Force active since last fall and now is with the Air Corps in Homestead, Fla. Rink says he recently ran into three Batista admirers who flew into the SAC base there to escape the wrath of Fidel. Pvt. Pete Danford sounds in from Ft. Knox, Ky., where he and Dave Sharrock are performing their security functions. On the USS Ticonderoga out of San Francisco is Bob Clothier who's had a good Far East stint and reports there's nothing like a good Japanese hotsi-bath and massage for what ails you. 'Frisco sounds good to me, Bob I may see you out there in June. Also in the Pacific theater is Ralph Manuel, aboard a radar picket ship.
At the end of March, Ens. Dick Schad reports back to the USS Helena, flagship of the Seventh Fleet, after a three-month engineering course at the Naval Station in San Diego Skip Louis regrets the lack of "Stoddart" efficiency, yet nevertheless had a lot of news. Skip reports that Jim Crawford's doing a fine job at Union Theological Seminary and enjoys the hard work. Jim's also an assistant pastor at a Long Island church. Appears that the famed Underwater Demolition Team has a tough new member in the person of ClayFreeman. Lastly, I'm pleased to say that Skip is now happily betrothed - plans to marry Lona Nielsen, an lowa State Teachers junior sometime next year.
From Eli country comes news other than that the Green has been licking the Bulldog's chops in football, basketball, hockey and you name it, all year. The barrister contingent there is considerable, so says HarryDodds, who backs it up with names like Morty Fisher, Roger Greene, Ron Snow and Dick Wolfe. From a singular position of indifference, I can't help but sympathize with and lend encouragement to all you guys having the perseverence, intestinal fortitude and rat-trap minds with which to glean a legal education. They just never seem to give law students enough credit. Harry's letter included a report on a few other '58s at New Haven - Bob Fosse (Berkely College of Divinity), John Ceely (French), and Mori Mitsui (Architecture). Harry adds that only six months of handshaking resulted in Mori's being elected president of the International Student Center. I always knew that a crew of eight was a little small for Mori.
Jack Concklin's at the Univ. of Conn, grad school of social work and says that MikeBzullak's in the Army for a six-month stint. Jeff Flood's in Germany, and Bob Bolinger's on the USS Canberra missile cruiser. Sharing in the pleasures of Fort Dix a few months ago were Dave Chapin, Bob Pratt, DonThomas, Ben Cooper and Don Witham. Forgot to add this item in the last issue but I got a collect call from Bob Eleveld and Larry Scoville a little while ago. I don't know if they do much of that kind of stuff at Michigan Law School but Scovs was so exuberant he could hardly hold the receiver. Funny, it was a week night and I thought that state was dry. However, at the other end of the temperance spectrum was Eleveld. Bob had a few disciplinary reports he was worried about but I told him that he'd just have to forget the judiciary committee - that it was long gone and past, and besides, that its present usefulness was considerably diminished by his inability to be in Hanover. Just remember, you two, there are always two sides to this collect call business.
I was all fired up the other day by news that the Class Stork had brought in one of his first announcements. The fact that Glower and Helen Jones are proud parents of a seven and a half pound boy as of Feb. 2 is now duly recorded. My sincerest felicitations.
I bring this month's column to an abrupt halt not because of a lack of space, not because I'm off to do a little skiing, not because I want to sun my body in the back yard and hook a few. An appellate brief needs to be researched and composed. I'm sick, sick, sick!
